The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team earned their first victory of the 2015-16 season with an 81-65 win against Elmira College (N.Y.) to finish third overall in the M Club Classic hosted by the University of Mount Union.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 1-3 on the season, while the Soaring Eagles dropped to 0-3 overall.
Sophomore post, Kara Hageman, scored her third career double-double contributing 17 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guards Jessica McCoy and Alex Roth turned in a matching 16 points a piece. Earning her second double-double this season, freshman guard Hillary Hellmann tallied 12 points and 12 rebounds.
McCoy was also named to the M Club Classic All-Tournament team.
The Spartans quickly took the lead, going on an early 4-0 run with back-to-back layups from McCoy and Hageman. The Soaring Eagles pressed forward to end the first quarter tied at 19-19. CWRU opened the second quarter going on a 9-0 run featuring two layups from McCoy followed by a three-point shot and a layup from Roth. Heading into the half, McCoy gave the Spartans a 12-point edge, 46-34.
The Spartans largest lead of 19 points came in the third quarter with 3:48 left on the clock as freshman forward Darby Kreienberg dropped in a shot good for three from behind the arc to put CWRU up 59-40. Remaining ahead for the rest of the game, senior guard Emily Young would secure the victory for the Spartans hitting a jumper with 18 seconds left in the game.
Danielle Cleary led the Soaring Eagles with 20 points and Lindsey Heaton added 12 points.
CWRU will now travel to Marietta, Ohio for the 2015 Marietta College Turkey Shoot. The team will begin competition on Saturday, November 28 at 8:00 p.m. against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
