McCoy's Career-High 20 Points Not Enough as Spartans Drop Close Game, 73-69, Against Waynesburg

Despite a career-high 20 points from junior guard Jessica McCoy, the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team dropped a close game, 73-69, against Waynesburg University in Alliance, Ohio during the first game of the M Club Classic hosted by the University of Mount Union.

With the loss, the Spartans will compete in the consolation game against Elmira College (N.Y.). Live stats and video will posted to athletics.case.edu prior to the start of the game.

The Spartans have fallen to 0-3 on the season, while the Yellow Jackets earned their first win to improve to 1-1 overall.

Along with her career-high 20 points, McCoy also contributed seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Also with a new career-best, freshman guard Hillary Hellmann turned in 18 points, brought down nine boards and earned four steals. Sophomore post Kara Hageman also scored in double-digits adding 17 points to the Spartans total as well as four rebounds and two assists.

The Yellow Jackets kept the game close early, but the Spartans quickly took their first lead, 8-7, with 8:14 left in the first quarter courtesy of a McCoy free throw. With 4:17 left to play in the first, the Spartans increased their lead by five, 16-11, as McCoy hit a three-pointer to provide the edge. CWRU would go on to lead by as many as 15 points during the first quarter, as Hellmann hit a jumper good for three with 1:37 left on the clock. The Yellow Jackets fought their way back into the game in the second quarter outscoring the Spartans 24-10 to head into the half ahead 39-36.

Continuing their success from the second quarter, the Yellow Jackets opened up the third quarter with a 6-0 run for a 42-36 edge. Twice CWRU came within just one point of Waynesburg. First at 2:40 left to play in the third after Hageman sunk a three-pointer to improve the Spartans total to 48-47 and then with 1:28 on the clock after a layup from McCoy for a score of 50-49. The late rally for the Spartans wasn't enough as the Yellow Jackets stayed ahead for the remainder of the game. 

Lauren Blair led all Yellow Jackets with 16 points and Heather Davis tallying 13 points and seven rebounds during the game.

The consolation game will begin at 3:00 p.m on Saturday, November 21.
