ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Junior post Laura Mummey (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) scored a game-high 20 points, but the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team let a 17-point lead slip away in a 55-54 loss at the University of Rochester on a University Athletic Association Sunday at the Louis Alexander Palestra.
The Spartans (7-9, 1-4 UAA) suffer their third last-second loss in the last three weeks, while the Yellowjackets (10-6, 2-3 UAA) snap a three-game losing skid.
Mummey's 20 points were accompanied by nine rebounds. Senior forward Berit Eppard (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) scored 14 points, and senior wing Brooke Orcutt (Morrison, Colo./Dakota Ridge) contributed across the board with four points, 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Rochester was led by Alexandra Leslie with 14 points, a game-high 14 rebounds, four assists, three blocks and three steals.
The Spartans led by as many as 17 in the second half, but a scoreless drought of almost 10 minutes allowed the Yellowjackets to get back into the game. Then with CWRU ahead 54-53, Rochester's Lauren Deming hit a game-winning layup with just 10 seconds on the clock. The Spartans attempt at a counter fell short at the buzzer.
Most of the game went the way of the Spartans, including the early portions. The first half was tight until an 8-0 run ending in a Mummey layup put the Spartans on top 26-17 with 5:58 on the clock. Three and a half minutes later, another Mummey bucket capped a 6-0 spurt that bumped CWRU's advantage to 32-22. That lead would hold strong into halftime as the Spartans remained on top, 34-25.
In the second, the Spartans' advantage grew to a high of 17, at 44-27, as Mummey scored six in a row to put the exclamation point on a 10-0 run that extended to the 15:43 mark. Rochester then pieced together a 16-0 run while holding CWRU scoreless for a whopping 9:55. The Yellowjackets final points in the rally came via a Kelsey Hurley layup that brought the score to 44-43 with 6:54 remaining.
But with her team in need of a bucket, sophomore guard Jessica McCoy (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) stepped up and nailed two consecutive three-pointers to put the visitor lead back to 50-43 with 4:50 left to play.
Unfortunately, another scoreless drought of 2:18 allowed Rochester to score the game's final eight points.
The Spartans now head back to Cleveland before departing for a second consecutive UAA road weekend which begins on Friday, January 30 with a 6:00 p.m. (CT) matchup versus the University of Chicago.
