PITTSBURGH - Junior post Laura Mummey (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) posted 13 points and eight rebounds, but the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team dropped a 59-58 heartbreaker at rival Carnegie Mellon University in the 2015 University Athletic Association opener at Skibo Gymnasium.

The Spartans fall to 6-6 overall, while the Tartans improve to 9-2.

In a back-and-forth final five minutes, the Spartans led 58-57 when senior wing Brooke Orcutt (Morrison, Colo./Dakota Ridge) hit two free throws with 11 seconds remaining. Then with just two seconds left on the clock, Liza Otto scored a layup to lift the hosts to victory.

Orcutt scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Lisa Murphy led Carnegie Mellon with 18 points, while Otto tallied 16.

In the first half, the score was tied six times before an 8-0 run for the Tartans made the score 27-19 as Lindsay Poss hit a three-pointer with 5:46 on the clock. The Spartans then finished the period on a 15-2 run, and a jumper by sophomore forward Berit Eppard (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) put the visitors on top, 34-29.

In the second, the Spartans maintained their lead until Otto hit a jumper to put Carnegie Mellon ahead 52-51 with 5:19 remaining. That bucket was part of another 8-0 run for the Tartans. Three ties and lead changes ensued before the deciding points by Otto.

The Spartans now return home for the first 2015 UAA weekend at Horsburgh Gymnasium. The team hosts New York University at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 16 and Brandeis University (Mass.) on Sunday, January 18 at 2:00 p.m.
