THE REAL McCOY
Sophomore guard Jessica McCoy, averaging a team-best 10.3 points per game, has averaged 8.5 points with 44 three-pointers in 34 career games. McCoy also has 10 career double-digit scoring efforts.
ESTABLISHING A BENCHMARK
The Spartans scored 23 points off of the bench in Monday's loss against Delaware Valley. Kara Hageman contributed 11 of the 23, while senior guard Rachel Beaty added eight – all in the first half. The team's season high for bench points is 34 at The College of Wooster on December 3.
POWER OF 4
In CWRU's five victories this season, four players have averaged double-digit points; Jessica McCoy (11.6), Brooke Orcutt (11.2), junior forward Laura Mummey (10.8) and senior forward Berit Eppard (10.4). In the team's four losses, no Spartan has averaged double-digits.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN WAY
Seniors Berit Eppard and Brooke Orcutt, who prepped at high schools located just 17 miles apart in suburban Denver, Colorado, serve as two of the team's tri-captains.
With a 3-0 home record this season, CWRU is 23-10 in 33 games played at Horsburgh Gymnasium since the beginning of the 2011-12 season.
SCOUTING THE BLUE STREAKS
Ranked 25th in the nation by D3Hoops.com, John Carroll is coming off of a 67-63 Ohio Athletic Conference win against Marietta College on December 20. Sophomore guard Katylyn Spahar led the Blue Streaks with 25 points, eight rebounds, five steals and three assists. Senior guard Emily Taylor added 11 points, four rebounds and two steals.
CWRU and JCU have met 25 times on the hardwood, and the Blue Streaks lead the all-time series, 16-9. Prior to a loss in the last meeting (2012), the Spartans had won the previous two matchups in 2011 (home) and 2009 (neutral).
Then senior guard Evy Iacono scored a school-record 37 points and became the 12th member of the program's 1,000-point club, but Case Western Reserve lost at John Carroll in a four-overtime affair in University Heights, 100-97, on November 28, 2012. Erin Mog led the Blue Streaks with 24 points, nine rebounds, nine assists and two steals.
The Case Western Reserve Athletic Department will take its yearly step back in time during the weekend of February 20-22 when it hosts the 10th Annual Throwback Weekend with University Athletic Association doubleheaders versus Emory University (Ga.) and the University of Rochester (N.Y.). The Spartan women will wear uniforms commemorating Flora Stone Mather College.
