MANHATTAN – The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team ended its weekend road trip with a 72-56 loss to University Athletic Association foe and No. 23/24 nationally ranked New York University on Sunday afternoon at the Coles Sports Center.

The Spartans (7-13, 1-8 UAA) were led by junior wing Brooke Orcutt (Morrison, Colo./Dakota Ridge), who matched a game high with 16 points. Senior guard Julie Mooney (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) and sophomore post Laura Mummey (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) contributed 13 and 11 points, respectively.

The Violets (18-2, 7-2 UAA) were led in scoring by Alexis Doherty (16) and Amy Harioka (15). Doherty also added a game-high 15 rebounds.

Halfway through the opening period, the Spartans grabbed a 14-11 lead thanks to a three-pointer by freshman guard Jessica McCoy (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) at the 11:07 mark. Four ties and three lead changes followed before NYU moved ahead for good, 25-23, on a Melissa Peng layup with 2:52 left before the break.

Overall, the hosts ended the period on a 10-3 run to lead 33-26 at halftime.

In the second, McCoy hit a trey to spark a 7-2 run that brought the Spartans to within five (40-35) at 13:37. However, the Violets hit three-pointers on each of their next two possessions and never looked back as the Spartans trailed by double-digits most of the way.

For the game, junior forward Erin Reynolds (St. Louis, Mo./Webster Groves) grabbed a career-best 11 rebounds for CWRU.

The Spartans now return home for their final games inside the friendly confines of Horsburgh Gymnasium on Friday and Sunday, February 14-16. The weekend opens against the University of Rochester (N.Y.) on Friday at 6:00 p.m. The Spartans will don pink uniforms as part of a Play4Kay event.

On Sunday, the team will honor its two seniors, Mooney and forward Lauren Elkin (Reisterstown, Md./Carver Center for Arts & Tech), prior to tip-off versus Emory University (Ga.) at 2:00 p.m.
