CLEVELAND – Senior guard Julie Mooney (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) scored a career-high 20 points, but the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team fell in overtime to No. 19/20 nationally ranked New York University, 84-82, in the finale of the school's ninth annual Throwback Weekend on Sunday at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

The Spartans dip to 7-11 and 1-6 in the University Athletic Association, while the Violets improve to 16-2 overall and 5-2 in the UAA.

Mooney scored 18 of her points in the second half and finished with career-best totals of eight rebounds and five blocked shots to go along with four assists. Three other Spartans scored in double-figures, including junior forward Brooke Orcutt (Morrison, Colo./Dakota Ridge) with 14 points, six rebounds and six assists. Sophomore post Laura Mummey (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) totaled 17 points and six rebounds, while junior point guard Amanda Germer (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) finished with 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.

NYU was led by Alex Doherty and Megan Dawe with 22 and 21 points, respectively. The visitors held a 48-36 advantage on the boards led by Kaitlyn Read with 13.

The Spartans led by six (13-7) early in the first half following a Mummey layup at the 14:04 mark. The Violets came back with a 13-2 run and led 20-15 after a Megan Dawe layup with 8:00 left before intermission. The visitor lead reached 24-17 several possessions later before the Spartans finished the half on a 19-8 run to lead 36-32. A three-pointer by Germer at 1:49 and a combined three free throws by junior guard Chelsea Steen (Newark, Ohio/Newark) accounted for the final six points of the run.

In the second half, NYU came out on a 15-4 run and led by seven when Read hit a layup with 14:26 remaining. Undaunted, the Spartans exploded several minutes later for a 12-0 run and led 56-51 after an "old-fashioned" three-point play by Mooney with 10:10 on the clock. Overall, the senior captain scored nine of her team's points during the spurt with a pair of three-pointers.

The next five minutes saw the Spartans answer with a clutch bucket each time NYU got close. Finally, the visitors were able to regain the advantage at 66-65 with two Read free throws at 5:08. Case then got four free throws combined by Germer and Reynolds to move back on top 69-66 with 4:25 left to play. The Spartans clenched on to that lead for the next four minutes until Maya Wasowicz nailed a three-pointer to tie the game at 78 with 32 seconds remaining.

On Case's next trip down the floor, freshman guard Jessica McCoy (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) grabbed an offensive rebound off of a three-point miss with 0.9 on the clock. After a timeout, Mooney had a chance to end the game but saw her three-point attempt rattle in and out, sending the game to extra time.

In OT, Doherty scored five of NYU's six points, and Read blocked a potential tying shot as the buzzer sounded.

The Spartans will have another chance at NYU next weekend during a road trip to Boston and New York City. The weekend opens with a 6:00 p.m. game at Brandeis University (Mass.) on Friday, February 7 then concludes at NYU at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 9.
