CLEVELAND – Junior wing Brooke Orcutt (Morrison, Colo./Dakota Ridge) scored a career-high 27 points, but the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team fell by a score of 80-66 to University Athletic Association foe University of Chicago on Sunday afternoon at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
The Spartans (7-9, 1-4 UAA) lose their fourth in a row, while the Maroons (9-7, 3-2 UAA) win their third straight.
Orcutt added seven rebounds and two assists to her effort. Sophomore post Laura Mummey (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) contributed 14 points and five boards.
Without injured junior captain and leading rebounder Berit Eppard (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek), the Spartans were dominated on the glass, 41-31. Twenty of the Maroons' boards came on the offensive end and led to advantages of 38-16 in points in the paint and 25-4 in second-chance points.
Three scored in double-figures for Chicago, including Ellie Greiner and Claire Devaney with 16 and 15 points, respectively.
The Maroons scored the first six points of the game and didn't trail until the final minute of the first half. The Maroons' lead reached 12 when Greiner hit a three to make the score 28-16 at 8:07, but the Spartans rallied with a 17-4 run and grabbed a 33-32 lead at 1:06 when Mummey hit a layup following a slick backdoor pass by junior forward Erin Reynolds (St. Louis, Mo./Webster Groves). The Maroons then scored the final bucket to go into halftime with a 34-33 advantage.
In the second half, back-to-back-to-back three-pointers by Greiner, Paige Womack and Greiner put the Maroons ahead 49-37 with 16:04 left to play. The Spartans twice got to within seven with Orcutt buckets at 14:19 and 13:27, but continued second-chance opportunities kept Chicago comfortably in front. The visitor lead reached a high of 19 (65-46) following a Devaney layup at 8:39.
The Spartans remain at home for a second-straight UAA home weekend beginning with a 6:00 p.m. matchup versus Brandeis University (Mass.) on Friday, January 31. The team concludes its four-game home stand versus New York University on Sunday, February 1 at 2:00 p.m.
Both men's and women's doubleheaders versus Brandeis and NYU are designated as CWRU' ninth annual Throwback Weekend.
