CLEVELAND – Junior wing Brooke Orcutt (Morrison, Colo./Dakota Ridge) scored 21 points and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds as the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team ran to a 77-54 victory versus rival Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) in the 2014 University Athletic Association opener on Saturday afternoon at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
The Spartans (7-5, 1-0 UAA) win their 14th-straight home game against the Tartans (9-3, 0-1 UAA) dating back to 2000.
Orcutt's second career double-double was accompanied by four assists and a career-best five three-pointers.
The Spartans hit a season-high 11 threes compared to just six for the visitors. Junior point guard Amanda Germer (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) accounted for three made shots from beyond the arc en route to a career-high 15 points.
Freshman guard Jessica McCoy (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) added two triples while totaling season highs of 14 points and six rebounds.
Case also held a 52-43 advantage in rebounding, led by junior forward Berit Eppard (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) with a career-high 14 boards to go along with 11 points. The double-double was Eppard's second this season.
The first half was sloppy with a combined 17 turnovers, but the Spartans rode the backs of several hot shooters to build a 36-18 lead at the break. The hosts finished the half on a 12-0 run that started with a fast-break layup by McCoy at 3:50 and finished with a pair of free throws by senior guard Julie Mooney (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) at 1:03. The Spartans hit six three-pointers in the half, two of which came during the key run, and Carnegie Mellon went scoreless for the final 5:13.
In the second, the Spartans opened on a 20-6 run and led by 32 (56-24) when McCoy nailed a three with 13:08 left to play.
The Tartans were led by Lisa Murphy and Gabrielle West with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The Spartans return to action with their first UAA weekend road trip of the season beginning at the University of Rochester (N.Y.) at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 17. The team then flies south to battle Emory University (Ga.) at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 19.
