CLEVELAND – Junior guard Rachel Beaty (Carrollton, Texas/Hebron) came off of the bench and scored a career-high 15 points as the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team defeated The College of Wooster, 66-49, on Wednesday night at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
The Spartans (5-4) move back above the .500 mark heading into their longest break of the season. The Fighting Scots (5-1) suffer their first loss this season and 12th in a row in the series with Case Western Reserve.
Beaty scored 13 of her points in the first half with a trio of three-pointers. Senior guard Julie Mooney (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) also scored 15 to match a career high, while junior wing Brooke Orcutt (Morrison, Colo./Dakota Ridge) added 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Second-chance scoring and points off of turnovers were the keys as the Spartans led 14-5 in the former and 15-2 in the latter. Beaty's points also contributed to a 36-9 advantage in bench scoring.
The Spartans led by as many as 17 (40-23) in the first half when Mooney hit two free throws to cap a 22-5 run at the 6:35 mark. Wooster was able to finish the period on a 14-5 run and cut its deficit to eight, at 45-37, as Sydney Failing hit the final bucket with 35 seconds on the clock.
There wasn't much movement on the scoreboard in the second half. The Spartan lead held between nine and 13 until a Mooney jumper put the score at 60-46 with 3:35 left to play.
Wooster was led by Karley Walker with a game-high 19 points.
The Spartans are now idle for final exams and winter break but will return to action on Friday and Saturday, December 27-28 at the Zimmerman Kiwanis Classic in Springfield, Ohio. Brescia University (Ky.) is the opening opponent on Friday at 12:00 p.m.
