Mummey’s Second Straight Double-Double Leads Spartan Women Past N.C. Wesleyan in Jean Edge Classic Championship

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – Sophomore post Laura Mummey (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) recorded her second straight double-double to open the season as the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team (2-0) defeated host North Carolina Wesleyan College (1-1) by a score of 79-63 in the championship game of the Jean Edge Classic on Sunday afternoon at Everett Gym.

Mummey's second career double-double came on a career-best 23 points and career high-tying 10 rebounds. From the field, she connected on 9-of-10 attempts. For the weekend, the second-year Spartan averaged 19 points and 10 boards en route to all-tournament team honors.

Joining Mummey on the all-tournament team, junior wing Brooke Orcutt (Morrison, Colo./Dakota Ridge) posted her first double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Orcutt averaged 11 points, 9.5 boards and three assists in two games this weekend.

Senior guard/co-captain Julie Mooney (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) also scored a career-high 12 points.

The Spartans never trailed in the game and dominated in the paint with a 40-14 scoring advantage. In the first half, Case opened with an 8-0 run that culminated in an Orcutt layup at 17:40. N.C. Wesleyan pulled within two thanks to a 14-8 spurt that ended in two Alexis Fitzgerald free throws at 12:28. However, the Spartans answered with four in a row en route to a 25-16 run that made the score 41-30 at half.

In the second, the Battling Bishops opened with a 15-7 run and brought the score to 48-45 when Kourtney Salisbury hit a layup with 13:58 left to play. Unfazed, the Spartans came back with a 14-5 run that made the score 62-50 as junior forward/co-captain Berit Eppard (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) accounted for the final bucket with 9:38 remaining. The Spartan lead never dipped below nine the rest of the way.

The Spartans return to action in the first game of a women's and men's doubleheader at cross-town rival Baldwin Wallace University at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 19.
