ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – Sophomore post Laura Mummey (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and junior forward Berit Eppard (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) each recorded their first career double-doubles as the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team opened the 2013-14 season with a 55-43 victory versus Methodist College (N.C.) on the opening night of the North Carolina Wesleyan College Jean Edge Classic at Everett Gym.
The Spartans (1-0) conclude the weekend tomorrow afternoon versus host N.C. Wesleyan at 1:30 p.m.
Defense and rebounding were the keys as the Spartans held the Monarchs (0-1) to 27 percent shooting from the field to go along with a 61-35 advantage on the boards.
Mummey's double-double came on career bests of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Eppard scored 10 points and grabbed a career-high 12 boards.
In addition, junior wing Brooke Orcutt (Morrison, Colo./Dakota Ridge) turned in an all-around performance with eight points, nine rebounds and five assists.
Although the Spartans never trailed, the game was in doubt at 16:52 of the second half when Jackie Lyles hit a jumper to pull Methodist to within 23-19. However, the Spartans responded with a 17-2 run that culminated in an Orcutt jumper with 10:03 left to play. Case's lead didn't dip below 10 again until the final minute.
In the first half, scoring was hard to come by in the opening minutes, but the Spartans led 4-2 after Mummey jumper at the 14:42 mark. The lead grew to eight, at 12-4, when Eppard hit a layup to cap a 10-2 run at 9:16, and the Spartans eventually got into the break with a 19-13 advantage.
Lyles led Methodist for the game with 11 points and five rebounds.
Following tomorrow's tournament game, the Spartans return to action this Tuesday, November 19 in the first game of a women's and men's doubleheader at cross-town rival Baldwin Wallace University at 6:00 p.m. in Berea.
