CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Junior guard Evy Iacono (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) scored a season-high 20 points and a second-half surge from the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team lifted the Spartans to a convincing 68-37 non-conference victory over The College of Wooster on Saturday afternoon inside Horsburgh Gymnasium.
The Spartans pick up their fourth-straight victory and improve to 6-3 overall. They now take time off for final exams and the holidays before returning to action on Wednesday, December 28, at the Smokey Ballenger Classic hosted by Otterbein University. Case opens the tournament versus St. Mary's College (Ind.) at 1:00 p.m. With the loss, Wooster slips to 1-6.
As a team, Case limited the Fighting Scots to just 31.3 percent shooting from the floor (15-of-48) and just 22.2% (2-of-9) from three-point range. Also of note, the Spartans defense forced the Fighting Scots into committing 24 turnovers as a team.
Wooster scored the opening points just seconds into the game when Suvi Puripattarapan grabbed the opening tip and raced down the floor for the lay-up. That lead was short-lived as the Spartans reeled off an 11-0 run over the next 4:04 fueled by five points from junior guard Erica Iafelice (North Canton, Ohio/Canton Hoover). The two teams traded baskets over the ensuing minutes before Wooster cut the Spartan advantage to eight (16-8) at the 10:35 mark on a jumper by Samantha Sulzer.
Once again, the Spartans rattled off a 12-2 run over nearly a six-minute stretch capped off by a jumper from freshman forward Brooke Orcutt (Morrison, Colo./Dakota Ridge) with an assist from Iacono as the lead swelled to 18 (28-10). Wooster slowly chipped away as the Spartans possessed a 32-20 lead at halftime.
Out of the break, Jessica Wingen cashed in on a pair of free throw attempts on Wooster's opening possession cutting the Case lead to 10 (32-22). However, the Spartans answered with another quick 6-0 run of their own on four points from senior forward Erin Hollinger (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) and a bucket by Iacono giving the hosts a 38-22 lead with 16:51 remaining. The Fighting Scots scored on two of their next three possession cutting the lead to 12 (38-26), but they weren't able to draw any closer as the Spartans pulled away and eventually cruised to the 31-point victory.
Iacono's 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting and a perfect 6-of-6 at the charity stripe led 13 Spartans who found the scoring column as all 18 Spartans logged playing time in the contest. The third-year Spartan tied with freshman Berit Eppard (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) for game-high honors pulling down seven rebounds to go along with three steals and three assists. Eppard concluded the contest with 10 points and two blocks in just 17 minutes of action. Additionally, Hollinger finished with eight points, six rebounds and a team-high five steals. She now has amassed 1,208 career points, just 12 shy of tying Jody Chatin's career mark of 1,220 for second in program history.
Sulzer paced the Fighting Scots with 15 points.
