Spartans Fall Twice at The Spring Games on Thursday

The Case Western Reserve University softball team suffered a pair of one-run losses on Thursday, as the Spartans were edged 4-3 by Nebraska Wesleyan University and 10-9 by Wisconsin Lutheran College at The Spring Games in Minneola, Florida.

The losses dropped the Spartans' record back to 4-4 for the year, while Nebraska Wesleyan improved to 7-4, and Wisconsin Lutheran moved to 3-5.

Game 1: Nebraska Wesleyan 4, CWRU 3
The Spartans got on the board in the first inning, as senior Nicole Carty roped a RBI double to left field that scored junior Dusstyn Reynolds.

The Prairie Wolves came back to even the score in the bottom of the second, and then took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

CWRU responded the next half inning as Reynolds hit a RBI single to right field that scored senior Caitlin Smith. In that same inning, junior Sydney Wagner was able to come around and score after an error by the Nebraska Wesleyan second baseman to give the Spartans a 3-2 lead.

However, the Prairie Wolves struck for a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth which would end being the game-winning runs as Nebraska Wesleyan held on for the 4-3 lead.

Senior Ilissa Hamilton started and suffered the loss. She finished the game with four runs allowed on eight hits, while striking out four batters.

Reynolds went a perfect four-for-four in game with one RBI and one run scored, while Carty added a two-for-four performance with one run driven in.

Game 2: Wisconsin Lutheran 10, CWRU 9
For the second-game on Thursday, the Spartans opened the game with a bang as junior Sarah Miller launched her first home run of the season to give CWRU a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. First-year Amanda Riely added to the lead in that same inning as she singled up the middle to score Reynolds.

The Spartans continued to add to their lead in the bottom of the second as they erupted for four runs in the inning. Smith and Miller each hit RBI doubles, while sophomore Liv Thomas hit a RBI single and Hamilton notched a RBI groundout.

Wisconsin Lutheran got on the board in the top of the third with a run of their own, but CWRU quickly responded the next half inning as Reynolds laced a single down the right field line to score Miller.

The Warriors struck for three runs in the fourth to cut the Spartan lead to 7-4, but CWRU once again answered the next half inning as junior Hope Yashnik ripped a RBI single through the left side of the infield that scored Hamilton.

Wisconsin Lutheran scored three runs in the sixth and then three more runs in the seventh to take the 10-8 lead going into the bottom of the seventh. The Spartans were able to cut the deficit to 10-9 in the bottom of the seventh with a RBI single from junior Sydney Wagner, but would be unable to tie the game.

Junior Sidney Brannam started and went 4.2 innings, as she allowed three earned on nine hits and struck out three batters. Thomas threw two innings of relief, while Carty pitched after and suffered the loss.

Miller, Reynolds and Wagner led the Spartans at the plate as they each tallied three hits, while Miller also scored three runs and drove in two others.

Case Western Reserve will conclude The Spring Games with two games on Friday, March 13th. The first game is scheduled to start at 1:45 p.m. against Coe College, followed by a game against Defiance College at 6:15 p.m. in Clermont, Florida.
