The Case Western Reserve University softball team picked up a pair of wins on Monday in Minneola, Florida, as the offense continued its surge in a 9-2 win over Heidelberg University in the first game of the day, and then picked up a 2-0 win over Haverford College in the late contest.
The Spartans improved to 3-1 with the two wins, while the Student Princes dropped to 1-2 overall and the Fords fell to 1-2 on the season as well.
Game 1: CWRU 9, Heidelberg 2
Case Western Reserve University junior Sarah Miller led the Spartans at the plate with a two-for-three performance in which she drove in two runs and also scored two runs.
The Spartans jumped out to the early lead, as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first. Senior Nicole Carty reached on an error by Heidelberg right fielder, which allowed Miller to score. Sophomore Liv Thomas then hit a RBI single up the middle that scored Carty.
CWRU added to their lead in the second when Miller laced a RBI double to right field that score first-year Amanda Riely. Thomas added to her RBI total in the third as she hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Carty from third base. The Spartans added two more runs in the inning on an error and a wild pitch to increase the advantage to 7-0.
The Student Princes cut the lead to 7-2 in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs, but CWRU would get those runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Riely registered her first collegiate RBI as she hit a RBI double to left field and then Miller hit a RBI single down the left field line.
Riely went two-for-two at the plate with one RBI, while junior Dusstyn Reynolds and Carty each went two-for-four.
Junior Sidney Brannam pitched the first six innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and two walks, while striking out six. She improved to 1-1 on the season with the victory. Carty wrapped up the victory as she allowed did not allow a run in one inning of relief.
Game 2: CWRU 2, Haverford 0
The Spartans opened up the scoring right away during the second game of the day, as Thomas drove in her team-leading seventh RBI on a single to left center field that drove in Reynolds to give CWRU a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
The game remained 1-0 until the top of the sixth inning, when senior Caitlin Smith and senior Ilissa Hamilton executed a perfect double steal where Smith stole second and the Hamilton stole home. The Spartans would hold on to the lead from there as they secured the 2-0 shutout victory.
Hamilton started and went the distance, as she did not allow a run on one hit. She struck out three batters in the game and improved to 2-0 on the season.
At the plate, Carty and Thomas each registered a two for-three performance, while Reynolds went one-for-four with one double.
CWRU will continue play at the The Spring Games on Tuesday, March 10th with a game against Heidelberg University at 1:45 p.m. and round out the third day of competition against DeSales University at 4:00 p.m.
