The Case Western Reserve University softball team concluded its regular season by sweeping Ohio Northern University in a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Mather Park in Cleveland, Ohio while increasing their win streak to seven games.
The Spartans picked up a 6-3 win over the Polar Bears in the early contest, and an 11-3 victory in five innings during the late affair.
The two wins raised the Spartans' record to 25-13 on the year, while Ohio Northern fell to 21-17 overall with the losses.
Game 1: CWRU 6, Ohio Northern 3
The first game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when freshman Hannah Olivares scored on an error by the Polar Bears to give CWRU the 1-0 lead.
Ohio Northern answered in the top of the fifth with three runs in the inning, but the Spartans would respond quickly the next half inning as senior Nicole Doyle laced a RBI single that scored sophomore Arisa Cleaveland to cut the deficit to 3-2. Freshman Liv Thomas then stepped to the plate and launched a three-run homer over the right field wall to give CWRU a 5-3 lead. The home run was Thomas' sixth of the season.
The Spartans added a run in the bottom of the sixth as Cleaveland hit her third home run of the season to right center field and that would be enough to secure the 6-3 Spartan victory.
Junior Ilissa Hamilton pitched the complete game, scattering eight hits, while striking out two batters and yielding three runs (zero earned). She improved to 13-6 on the season. Kaitlin Surdej started for Ohio Northern and suffered the loss, falling to 13-8 on the year.
At the plate, Cleaveland went two-for-three with two runs scored and one RBI, while Thomas added a one-for-two day with one home run and three runs driven in.
Game 2: CWRU 11, Ohio Northern 3 (5 innings)
In the second game of the day, the Polar Bears struck first as they put up a run in the top of the first inning. The scored remained 1-0 until the bottom of the third when the Spartans' struck for three runs in the inning to take a 3-1 lead. Included in the inning was a RBI single from junior Nicole Carty, and RBI doubles from both Doyle and Thomas.
Ohio Northern would respond in the next half inning with two runs of their own to tie the score at 3-3. During the bottom of the fourth inning, CWRU would once again strike for a three-run inning as Carty crushed her team-leading seventh home run over the left center field wall, a three-run shot, that gave the Spartans a 6-3 lead.
CWRU would add to their lead in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore Hope Yashnik drilled a three-run homer to left field, extending the Spartan lead to 9-3. Cleaveland then hit a RBI single and Carty followed with a RBI double to secure run-rule shortened victory.
Sophomore Sidney Brannam started and earned the win, as she improved to 11-5 on the season. She pitched four innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on 10 hits and a walk, while striking out four batters. Freshman Grace Yeung pitched a scoreless inning in relief and struck out one hitter.
Carty led the Spartans at the plate with a three-for-four performance, including five RBI's, two runs scored and one home run. Cleaveland also went three-for-four at the plate, while Yashnik went two-for three with three runs batted in.
With the sweep on Tuesday, Case Western Reserve completed a strong finish to the 2019 regular season. CWRU won their last seven games to finish above .500 for the eighth consecutive season.
