Reynolds’ Two Home Runs Highlight Softball Sweep over Carnegie Mellon

Sophomore Dusstyn Reynolds of the Case Western Reserve University softball team hit two home runs and drove in six RBI's, as the Spartans swept a doubleheader over Carnegie Mellon University at Mather Park in Cleveland, Ohio on Friday afternoon. CWRU picked up a 6-0 win over the Tartans in the early contest, and an 8-0 victory in five innings in the late affair.

The two wins raised the Spartans' record to 14-6 overall and 3-1 in the University Athletic Association, while Carnegie Mellon fell to 5-13 overall and 0-6 in the conference with the losses.

Reynolds led the Spartans at the plate with a two-for-six performance, including two home runs and six runs batted in.

Game 1: CWRU 6, Carnegie Mellon 0
The first game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Spartans came alive for five runs in the inning and then they added an insurance in the sixth to secure the victory.

Sophomore Arisa Cleaveland got the Spartans scoring started when she laced a two-run RBI double to left field that scored sophomore Hope Yashnik and junior Ilissa Hamilton. Reynolds then stepped to the plate and hit a three run homer down the right field line that increased the advantage to 5-0.

CWRU added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when freshman Liv Thomas doubled down the right field line to score junior Caitlin Smith from second.

Hamilton pitched the complete game shutout, as she scattered five hits and allowed only one walk, while striking out 10 batters. She improved to 6-3 on the season. Scotty McGee suffered the loss for the Tartans, as she fell to 3-4 on the campaign.

At the plate, Yashnik went a perfect three-for-three, while Cleaveland added a two-for-three game with two runs batted in.

Game 2: CWRU 8, Carnegie Mellon 0 (5 innings)
The Spartans scored a pair of runs in the first and then erupted for six runs in the fifth to secure an 8-0 win in five innings over the Tartans during the late game.

Sophomore Sidney Brannam pitched all five innings, holding Carnegie Mellon scoreless on four hits and a walk, while striking out three batters. It was her seventh win of the season, as she is now 7-2 overall on the campaign.

Thomas, who went two-for-three in the game with one run batted in, got the Spartans on the board in the first inning with a double to right center field that scored senior Nicole Doyle. Reynolds then delivered a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Cleaveland, giving CWRU a 2-0 lead.

The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth, when the Spartans' offense came alive for six runs in the inning. Included in the inning were RBI singles from Cleaveland and junior Nicole Carty, and a pair of two run home runs from Reynolds and Yashnik. Reynolds' home run was her second of the day and fifth of the season, while Yashnik's was her first of the campaign.

Cleaveland finished the second game two-for-three at the plate, while Reynolds drove in three runs and Yashnik drove in two.

Case Western Reserve will return to action tomorrow, as they wrap-up their four-game series against Carnegie Mellon. The first game of the doubleheader is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
