Hamilton’s Two Home Runs Highlight Softball Sweep at John Carroll

Junior Ilissa Hamilton of the Case Western Reserve University softball team hit two home runs and drove in four RBI's, as the Spartans swept a doubleheader over John Carroll University at Bracken Field in University Heights, Ohio on Tuesday afternoon. CWRU picked up a 6-4 win over the Blue Streaks in the early contest, and a 10-0 victory in five innings in the late affair.

The two wins raised the Spartans' record to 11-5 on the year, while John Carroll fell to 9-7 with the losses.

Hamilton led the Spartans at the plate with a four-for-four performance, including two home runs, one triple and four runs batted in.

Game 1: CWRU 6, John Carroll 4
The first game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when the Spartans came alive for four runs in the inning, all coming via the home run ball.

Hamilton started the scoring when she hit a two run homer over the left field wall that scored junior Melissa Cuellar. Senior Nicole Doyle then stepped to the plate and delivered her third home run of the season to give CWRU a 3-0 lead. Junior Nicole Carty capped off the inning with her third home run of the year to give the Spartans a commanding 4-0 advantage.

CWRU would add another home run in the top of the sixth when Cuellar launched her second home run of the campaign to increase the lead to 5-0. The Spartans added an insurance in the top of the seventh when sophomore Dusstyn Reynolds lined a single through the right side of the infield that scored freshman Hannah Olivares.

The Blue Streaks would attempt a comeback in the bottom half of the seventh as they scored four runs in the inning to cut the Spartan lead to 6-4. However, CWRU would be able to hold off John Carroll to secure the 6-4 victory.

Hamilton pitched the complete game, as she scattered seven hits, while striking out a season-high 13 batters and yielding four earned runs. She improved to 5-2 on the season.

At the plate, freshman Liv Thomas went three-for-four, while Hamilton added a two-for-two game with one home run and two RBI's.

Game 2: CWRU 10, John Carroll 0 (5 innings)
The Spartans scored a run in the first, a run in the second, four runs in the third and another four runs in the fifth to secure a 10-0 win in five innings over the Blue Streaks during the late game.

Sophomore Sidney Brannam pitched all five innings, holding John Carroll scoreless on four hits and a walk, while striking out one batter. It was her fifth win of the season, as she is now 5-2 overall on the campaign.

Carty, who went three-for-four in the game with one run batted in, got the Spartans on the board in the first inning with a single up the middle that scored Doyle. The score remained 1-0 until the top of second when sophomore Arisa Cleaveland reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed Hamilton to score.

The Spartans then put up four runs in the third inning, including a solo home run from Thomas, a RBI triple from Hamilton and a RBI single from Doyle.

CWRU continued to add to their lead in the fifth as the squad scored another four runs to increase the lead to 10-0. Included in the inning was Hamilton's second home run of the day and a two-run RBI single from Cleaveland.

Hamilton finished the second game two-for-two at the plate with three runs scored, two RBI's and one walk, while Cuellar also added a two-for-two performance and a walk.

Case Western Reserve will look to extend their winning streak this weekend, when the team opens up conference play against the New York University Violets for a four-game series on Friday and Saturday. The first game of the doubleheader on Friday is slated to start at 2:00 p.m. at Mather Park.
