Softball Extends Winning Streak to Five; Sweep Mount Union in Sunday Doubleheader

The Case Western Reserve University softball team extended their winning streak to five games and improve to 9-5 on the 2019 campaign after sweeping the University of Mount Union 9-0 in five innings and 9-1 in six innings during a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon in Cleveland, Ohio.

With the two losses, the Purple Raiders dropped to 10-8 overall on the season.

Game 1: CWRU 9, Mount Union 0 (5 innings)
The Spartans scored a pair of runs in the first, erupted for a five-run inning in the second and then added another pair of runs in the fourth to secure a 9-0 win in five innings over the Purple Raiders during the early game.

Junior Ilissa Hamilton pitched all five innings, holding Mount Union scoreless on two hits, while striking out two batters. It was her fourth win of the season, as she is now 4-2 overall on the campaign.

Sophomore Dusstyn Reynolds, who went two-for-three in the game with four RBI's, one run scored and one home run, got the Spartans on the board in the first inning with a with a double to right center field that scored senior Nicole Doyle and junior Nicole Carty. The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the second when Doyle launched a three-run home run to left field to increase the advantage to 5-0. Reynolds then hit RBI groundout and sophomore Sydney Wagner hit a RBI double to left center field to give CWRU a 7-0 lead.

The Spartans added another two runs in the fourth, including a solo home run from Reynolds to right center field. CWRU held on to put the run-rule into effect after scoreless top of the fifth to secure the victory.

Peyton Morrison started and suffered the loss for Mount Union in the first game, dropping to 3-4 on the season.

Game 2: CWRU 9, Mount Union 1 (6 innings)
The Spartans made the most of their 10 hits and took advantage of two errors and two walks from the Purple Raiders to claim a 9-1 win over Mount Union in the late contest.

Mount Union broke through in the top of the first to take the early 1-0 lead. CWRU would even the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second and then took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third after freshman Liv Thomas laced a double to left center field that scored Carty from second.

The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the fifth when the Spartans broke out for four runs in the inning. Included in the inning was a bases-loaded two-run RBI double from Reynolds that scored sophomore Arisa Cleaveland and Carty. CWRU closed out the scoring in the sixth after junior Melissa Cuellar launched a solo home run over the left center field wall and then Carty delivered the two-run homer that put the run-rule into effect, securing the 9-1 Spartan victory.

Sophomore Sidney Brannam started and went six innings on the mound, allowing four hits and a walk, while striking out four batters. She improved to 4-2 on the season with the victory. Ashley Cascio took the loss for Mount Union, falling to 0-1 for the season.

Carty finished a perfect four-for-four at the plate with three runs scored and two runs batted in, while Reynolds went two-for-two with a two runs scored and two RBI's.

Case Western Reserve will return to action on Tuesday, March 26th, when the team travels to University Heights, Ohio to face John Carroll University for a doubleheader. The first pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
