The Case Western Reserve University softball team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon in Gambier, Ohio, defeating Kenyon College 13-2 in five innings in the first game of the day, and then defeated the Ladies 14-6 in six innings in the late contest.
The Spartans improved to 7-5 this season with the two wins, while Kenyon dropped to 13-7 overall.
Game 1: CWRU 13, Kenyon 2 (5 innings)
Junior Nicole Carty led the Spartans at the plate in the first game, as she went four-for-four with a home run, double and three RBI's.
CWRU got on the board first when freshman Liv Thomas hit an RBI single that drove in sophomore Arisa Cleaveland. The Spartans added to their lead in the bottom of the second when junior Ilissa Hamilton hit an RBI double that scored sophomore Sydney Wagner to increase the lead to 2-0.
Kenyon scored a run in the top of the third, and then CWRU scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning, including a two-run home run from Carty, that increased the Spartan lead to 7-1.
The Spartans added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth, as Wagner drove in three runs with a RBI double, junior Ilissa Hamilton drove in a run with an RBI triple and senior Nicole Doyle and Carty drove in runs with a RBI single to increase the lead to 13-1. Kenyon cut the lead to 13-2 in the top of the fifth, but the Spartans were able to hold for the victory.
Hamilton started and pitched another outstanding game as she struck out four batters and allowed only five hits and two earned runs. She improved to 3-2 on the year with the win.
Game 2: CWRU 14, Kenyon 6
Kenyon took the early lead in the second game, going up 1-0 in the top of the first. CWRU responded quickly as sophomore Dusstyn Reynolds hit a RBI single that scored Doyle to even the score at 1-1.
The Ladies took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second, but once again the Spartans responded as Doyle hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored junior Melissa Cuellar. CWRU added five more runs in the bottom of the third to increase the lead to 7-2. Wagner and Cuellar each registered RBI's in the inning, while Doyle drove in two runs.
Kenyon scored five runs in the top of the fourth to cut the Spartans lead to 7-6.
However, CWRU erupted in the bottom of the fifth with five runs to increase the lead to 12-6. The Spartans then added another two runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the 14-6 victory.
Doyle and Carty each went for three-for-four during the second game, as Doyle drove in five runs and Carty registered a RBI. Reynolds and Cuellar each gathered a pair of hits.
Carty started and went all six innings as she allowed four earned runs on 10 hits, and struck out one batter.
Case Western Reserve will be back in action on Sunday, March 24th when the team hosts the University of Mount Union at Mather Park in Cleveland, Ohio. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
