Spartans Split DH against Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday

The Case Western Reserve University softball team split a doubleheader against Baldwin Wallace University in Cleveland, Ohio on Wednesday afternoon. BW came away with the victory in the early contest, 5-4, but the Spartans rallied back in the second game of the doubleheader to win 14-4 in five innings.

With the split, CWRU now has an overall record 5-5, while the Yellow Jackets moved to 12-2 overall on the season.

Game 1: BW 5, CWRU 4 (8 innings)
The Spartans jumped out the 1-0 lead early, as freshman Liv Thomas lined a single to right center to score senior Nicole Doyle in the bottom of the first inning

BW would even the score at 1-1 in the top of the third inning and then take in the lead in the top of the fourth after back-to-back solo home runs from Ashley Matousek and Mackenzie Mulligan.

CWRU would match the Yellow Jackets the next half inning as Thomas launched a solo home run over the center field wall, and then sophomore Dusstyn Reynolds followed with another home run over the center field to even the game at 3-3.

The Yellow Jackets scored a run in the top of the fifth, but once again the Spartans would quickly match as Reynolds hit a fly ball to left field that scored Doyle from third. The game would remain 4-4 until the top of the eighth inning when BW scored a run to take the 5-4 lead. CWRU was unable to find the equalizer as BW secured the victory.

Thomas led the Spartans offensively as she went two-for-tree with one home run and two runs batted in. Reynolds also put in a good performance at the plate, as she went two-for-four with a double, home run and two RBI's.

Junior Ilissa Hamilton started the game and two earned runs on six hits while striking out 10 batters. Junior Nicole Carty pitched in relief, allowing one run on two hits. Carty took the loss, dropping to 0-1 on the year, while Nikki Camarati collected the win for the Yellow Jackets to improve to 6-1.

Game 2: CWRU 14, BW 4 (5 innings)
The Spartans jumped out to a 1-0 lead after two innings, and tacked on eight more runs in the third and five runs in the fourth, en route to a run-rule shortened victory over the Yellow Jackets in the second game of the day.

Doyle and sophomore Hope Yashnik each drove in a game high three runs in the game, while Doyle hit her first home run of the season and Reynolds cranked her second home run of the day.

CWRU put a run on the board in the second inning when Reynolds hit her second home run of the season to right center field. BW scored their first two runs of the game in the top of the third, but the Spartans quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning as they erupted for eight runs. Included in those eight runs was a two-run home run from Doyle, a two-run RBI double from Yashnik and RBI singles from sophomore Sydney Wagner and freshman Grace Yeung.

The Spartans added to their in the fourth with five more runs to increase the advantage to 14-2. BW scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, but CWRU would hold for the 14-4 victory in five innings.

Sophomore Sidney Brannam pitched all five innings, allowing four earned runs on 11 hits, while striking out four batters. She improved to 3-2 with the victory. Abby Cosart took the loss for the Yellow Jackets, falling to 4-1 on the year.

Case Western Reserve will be back in action this weekend when the squad hosts Kenyon College for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 23rd at Mather Park. The first game of the doubleheader is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
