The seventh-ranked Case Western Reserve University softball team will get its 2019 season started this weekend, when the Spartans travel to Lexington, Kentucky to play in the Pio Classic, hosted by Transylvania University, on Saturday, March 2nd.
The Spartans are scheduled to play Thomas More College on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. followed by a 1:30 p.m. game against host Transylvania University. CWRU was originally scheduled to play an additional doubleheader on Sunday against DePauw University and Transylvania, however those games have been cancelled due to expected inclement weather.

The Spartans will open the 2019 season ranked ninth in the first National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top-25 Poll, following the most successful season in the program's history. CWRU is slated to return 16 players from last year's team, eight of which have significant starting experience.
The Spartans are guided by Head Coach Josie Henry, who is starting her ninth season with the program. She has tallied a career record of 205-127 for a .617 winning percentage, while leading the team to the finals round of the NCAA Division III Championships in 2018. Henry is assisted by Andrea Nagy, Ashley Parello, Katelyn Gibson and Hannah Mehrle.
Thomas More Saints
The Saints are also set to open their season on Saturday against the Spartans. Thomas More finished the 2018 season with a 32-16 record, while batting .334 as a team with a 3.09 ERA.
The Saints are under the leadership of Lindsey Eagan who is in her 11th season with the program. She is assisted by Pat Eagan and Dallis Knotts.
Transylvania will open their season on Saturday against Thomas More. The Pioneers finished the 2018 season with a 34-9 record, while batting .299 as a team with a 1.17 ERA. Transylvania returns senior Brittany Mumford who appeared in all 43 games last year, and led the squad in average (.394), hits (54) and home runs (5).
The Pioneers are led by Shawn Hendrickson in his fifth season. He is assisted by Natalie Hernandez, Kimi Blewett and Greg Shewmaker.
This will be the first meeting between the Spartans and Thomas More during the Coach Henry era.
CWRU played Transylvania back in 2017 during their spring break trip to Florida. The Spartans earned a 3-0 win in eight innings.
During 2018, the Spartans recorded a program-best 38-12 record and finished tied for fifth at the 2018 NCAA Division III Championships…After earning All-UAA First Team honors, the Spartans return junior Ilissa Hamilton and Sidney Brannam this season…Hamilton set the school's single-season record in both wins (21) and strikeouts (184) last season, as she surpassed former Spartan Rebecca Taylor in both categories…Senior Nicole Doyle also returns this season after earning All-UAA Second Team honors in 2018…Last season, CWRU defeated Marietta College (9-2) in their season opener…The Spartans hit .322 as a team slugged 29 home runs, with the pitching staff notching a 2.17 team ERA last year.
