CWRU Softball Falls to No. 3 UT-Tyler in NCAA D-III Championships Opener

The Case Western Reserve University softball team opened play at the NCAA Division III Championships on Thursday with a 7-1 loss to the third-ranked University of Texas at Tyler at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

The Spartans slipped to 37-11 with the loss, while UT-Tyler raised their record to 44-3 on the campaign.

The Patriots wasted no time on Thursday, as they got out to the early lead with a run in the first, second and fourth innings to take the early 3-0 lead.

CWRU got on the board in the top of the fifth inning when freshman Arisa Cleaveland hit a RBI single up the middle to score sophomore Caitlin Smith from second, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

UT-Tyler added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth when Kailey Henderson hit a three run homer down the left field line and then Ashley Perez hit a RBI single to right center field, increasing the Patriot lead to 7-1 after five innings of play.

Sophomore Ilissa Hamilton started and allowed five earned runs in the game, as she took the loss and fell to 20-7 on season. Senior Katie Dzierwa pitched in relief of Hamilton, allowing one earned run on two hits and zero walks.

Cleaveland and senior Grace Tritchler each tallied a hit, while junior Nicole Doyle and freshman Dusstyn Reynolds each recorded a walk.

Case Western Reserve moves into the losers bracket in the double-elimination format and will battle 14th-ranked Rowan University on Friday, May 25th at 2:30 p.m. ET.
