CWRU Softball Heads to NCAA D-III Championships

The Case Western Reserve University softball team is one of eight programs that has advanced to the NCAA Division III Championships. All games will be contested at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Complex in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Action begins on Thursday, May 24th and continues thru Monday, May 28th and possibly Tuesday, May 29th for the if-game; the format for the Championships is double-elimination until the final two teams are determined, then it becomes best-of-three in the finals two days.

The schedule for the first two days is as follows:

Thursday, May 24

Game 1 at 12 pm ET: Va. Wesleyan (50-2) vs. Ithaca (33-11)

Game 2 at 2:30 pm ET: MIT (38-9-1) vs. Luther (40-9)

Game 3 at 5:00 pm ET: UT-Tyler (43-3) vs. CWRU (37-10)

Game 4 at 7:30 pm ET: Rowan (39-11-1) vs. Ill. Wesleyan (36-11-1)

Friday, May 25

Game 5 at 12:00 pm ET: Loser Game 1 vs. Loser Game 2

Game 6 at 2:30 pm ET: Loser Game 3 vs. Loser Game 4

Game 7 at 5:30 pm ET: Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 4

Game 8 at 8:00 pm ET: Winner Game 1 vs. Winner Game 2

The Spartans, led by Head Coach Josie Henry, head into the Championships with an overall record of 37-10, which is already the most single-season victories in program history. CWRU punched its ticket to the Championships after winning the NCAA Holland Super Regional, topping Hope College in a best-of-three series. The Spartans recorded 3-2 outcome in the opener on Friday before Hope forced a third contest after winning Saturday's first game, 3-1. In the deciding tilt, CWRU prevailed by a 4-1 margin, sending the team to its first-ever Championships appearance.

Sophomore Ilissa Hamilton was tabbed as the Super Regional Most Outstanding Pitcher after going 2-1 with a 2.47 earned run average and nine strikeouts in 17 innings pitched. Senior Katie Wede was selected as the Most Outstanding Player after hitting .400 (4-for-10) with two runs scored and two stolen bases.

Case Western Reserve will be making the program's first-ever trip to the NCAA Championships…CWRU's 37 wins represents the most single-season wins in program history…Senior Maren Waldner, the University Athletic Association Position Player of the Year and First-Team All-UAA honoree, paces the team with a .461 batting average (76-for-165) and is tied for the team lead with 40 runs scored and 36 runs batted in…Pitcher Ilissa Hamilton has been a workhorse in the circle for CWRU during the postseason, figuring in all eight decisions and tossing 46 out of a possible 56 innings, where she has recorded an ERA of 1.37 and 32 strikeouts…Earlier in the postseason, Hamilton was chosen as the Most Outstanding Player of the Notre Dame Regional…Hamilton, who garnered First Team All-UAA acclaim, enters the NCAA Championships with a 20-6 record…Other CWRU representatives on the Notre Dame Regional Team included junior Nicole Doyle, freshman Sarah Miller and freshman Arisa Cleaveland…Waldner leads the team with 24 multiple-hit games this season and 10 multiple RBI games, while senior Grace Tritchler ranks second in both categories with 18 multiple hit games and nine multiple RBI games…The Spartans are batting .329 this season and averaging 6.0 runs per game, while the pitching staff is tallying a 2.10 earned run average and a .244 opponents' batting average.
