The Case Western Reserve University softball team picked up a pair of wins on Monday afternoon in Alliance, Ohio, defeating the University of Mount Union 3-1 in the first game of the day, and then held on for a 7-5 win over the Purple Raiders in the late contest.
The Spartans improved to 25-8 this season with the two wins, while Mount Union dropped to 13-21 overall.
Game 1: CWRU 3, Mount Union 1
Case Western Reserve senior Grace Tritchler led the Spartans at the plate in the first game, as she went one-for-four with one double and one run scored, including the go-ahead RBI double in the top of the fifth.
CWRU got on the board first after an RBI single from sophomore Ilissa Hamilton that scored junior Nicole Doyle, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead after the top of the fourth. However, in the next half inning, the Purple Raiders answered with a solo home run from Morgan Riley, evening the score at 1-1.
The game stayed 1-1 until the top of the fifth when Tritchler delivered the go-ahead RBI double, scoring senior Katie Wede and giving the Spartans a 2-1 advantage. CWRU added another run in that same inning as freshman Sarah Miller hit a RBI single to right field that scored Tritchler.
Miller and Doyle each finished the game two-for-three at the plate.
Hamilton started and pitched another outstanding game as she matched her career-high with 11 strikeouts and allowed only one hit, the solo home run given up in the bottom of the fourth. She improved to 11-4 on the year with the win. Jenna Liles was credited with the loss for Mount Union, falling to 1-5 on the year.
Game 2: CWRU 7, Mount Union 5
The Spartans took the early lead in the second game of the day, and were able to withstand a late push from the Purple Raiders to hold on for a 7-5 victory.
Case Western Reserve scored two runs off Mount Union starter Hannah Reusser in the top of the first inning to take an early lead in the game. Miller laced a double to center field that scored senior Maren Waldner and Tritchler to get the Spartans' on the board first.
After Mount Union evened the game at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the third, Tritchler hit an RBI double and then Doyle followed with a RBI single in the fifth. In that same inning, sophomore Nicole Carty added a RBI double and then sophomore Melissa Cuellar hit a two-run homer to give CWRU the 7-2 advantage.
The Purple Raiders attempted a late comeback, scoring two runs in the fifth and then another in the seventh. However, the Spartans' held on and secured the 7-5 victory.
Freshman Sidney Brannam went the distance on the mound in the game for the Spartans, scattering seven hits and two walks, while striking out four and yielding just one earned run. She improved to 12-4 on the year with the win. Freshman Arisa Cleaveland contributed three of the Spartans' 16 hits, while Tritchler, Miller, Doyle and Carty each had a pair of hits.
Reusser took the loss for Mount Union on the mound, falling to 8-9 on the year.
Case Western Reserve will return to action on Wednesday, April 25th, when the team welcomes John Carroll University to Mather Park for a doubleheader. The first pitch on Wednesday is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
