The Case Western Reserve University softball team earned a sweep over the Washington University (Mo.) Bears at Mather Park in Cleveland, Ohio on Friday afternoon. CWRU picked up a 2-1 win over the Bears in the early contest, and a 7-1 victory in the late affair.
The two win raised the Spartans' record to 22-7 overall and 9-5 in the UAA, while Washington fell to 8-12 overall and 0-6 in the conference with the two losses.
Senior Maren Waldner led the Spartans at the plate with a four-for-seven performance, including three runs batted in. She has now increased her batting average to .528 (56-for-106).
Game 1: CWRU 2, WashU 1
Case Western Reserve sophomore Nicole Carty delivered the go-ahead RBI double that secured the 2-1 Spartan victory in the early affair on Friday.
Washington got on the board first after an error allowed Amy Walsh to score, giving the Bears the early 1-0 lead. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the third when Waldner hit a RBI single that scored senior Katie Wede, evening the score at 1-1.
The game stayed 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth when Carty drilled the go-ahead RBI double to right field that allowed freshman Sarah Miller to score, securing 2-1 CWRU victory.
Sophomore Ilissa Hamilton struck out 10 batters and allowed one run on only two hits during her seven innings, earning the win to improve to 9-4 on the year.
Anna McKee was credited with the loss for the Bears, falling to 5-5 on the year.
Game 2: CWRU 7, WashU 1
The Spartans scored four runs in the fourth, two in the third and one in the sixth to secure the 7-1 win over Washington in the late game on Friday.
CWRU opened the scoring in the bottom of the first two-run RBI single from Waldner that scored Wede and freshman Arisa Cleaveland. Junior Nicole Doyle then reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Waldner to score. The Spartans capped off the scoring in the inning with senior Grace Tritchler scoring on a wild pitch, which extended the CWRU lead to 4-0.
The Spartans added two more runs in the third after RBI doubles from both Doyle and Carty to increase the lead to 6-0. CWRU scored their seventh run in the bottom of the fourth after an RBI single from Tritchler. The Bears scored a run in the sixth, but were unable to capitalize after that run.
Freshman Sidney Brannam started and went six innings, allowing only one run on eight hits and striking out one batter. She improved to a team-best 11-3 on the season with the victory. Senior Katie Dzierwa pitched one inning in relief, allowing only hit and striking out a batter.
Waldner and Tritchler each went two-for-four in the second game, while Doyle added a one-for-three performance with two runs batted in.
Case Western Reserve will return to action tomorrow, as they wrap-up their four-game series against Washington at Mather Park in Cleveland. The first game of the doubleheader is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
