CWRU Softball Heads to Arizona for the Tucson Invitational

The Case Western Reserve University softball team will continue competition in the 2018 season as the team is set to travel to Tucson, Arizona to play eight games in five days from March 12th – 16th at the Tucson Invitational in Tucson, Arizona.

CWRU Spartans
The Spartans opened the 2018 season with a perfect 4-0 record at the Emory & Henry Tournament in Emory, Virginia. The Spartans outscored their opponents 34-8 during the tournament, including two wins by eight or more runs. Senior Grace Tritchler led the squad with two home runs and eight runs batted in, while sophomore Ilissa Hamilton struck out 15 batters in 12.0 innings to earn a 2-0 record. CWRU scored their 34 runs with 10 different players picking up RBI's.

The Spartans are guided by Head Coach Josie Henry, who is in her eighth season with the program. Henry is assisted by Shannel Blackshear, Ashley Parello, Hannah Mehrle, Andrea Nagy, Annie Wennerberg and Katelyn Gibson.

Wisconsin-La Crosse Eagles
The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse has opened their 2018 season with a record of 0-2. They began play on Saturday, February 24th against Gustavus Adolphus College and the College of Saint Benedict. The Eagles are led by sophomore Grace Mindrup, who has four hits in her first seven at bats, including one run batted in. Setting the pitching pace for UWL is freshman Sydne Shattuck, who has a 0.00 ERA and four strikeouts.

UWL is led by Chris Helixon in his 13th season. He is assisted by Tom Clements and Jennifer Gallagher.

RIT Tigers
The Tigers will begin their season on Saturday at the Tucson Invitational, as they open up against Cornell College and Central College. RIT returns 11 players from last season's squad that finished with a 22-16 overall record.

The Tigers are under the leadership of Rebecca Stryker who is in her ninth season with the program. She is assisted by Nicole Watson and Mary Karen Wheat.

Hood Blazers
The Blazers have opened their 2018 season with a 2-4 record. Hood will be coming off of a split against Dickinson College on Sunday, March 4th. Junior Kaitlin Barron has led the Blazers so far this season, tallying five hits in 10 at bats, while also driving in five runs. Senior Sophia Leaman has pitched 18.2 innings this season, allowing six runs on 22 hits.

Hood is led by Terry Burdette in his fourth season. He is assisted by LeEllen Lewis, Kelsey Lineberger and Rachel Teti.

Stevens Ducks
Stevens will open their 2018 season at the Tucson Invitational after closing the 2017 season with a 24-17 mark. The Ducks are led by senior Corinne Loncar, who recorded 53 hits and 33 runs batted in during the 2017 season. Senior Olivia Gemma will be the leader on the mound after posting a 4.03 ERA and strikeouts last season.

The Ducks are under the leadership of Emily Kaczmarek who is her first season with the program. She is assisted by Ryan Vander May, Brianna Sandone and Katie Eskin.

Augsburg Auggies
The Auggies have opened the 2018 season with a record of 4-0 after beginning play this past weekend. Augsburg is led by sophomore Shannon Dale, who leads the team with eight hits. Setting the pitching pace for the Auggies is junior Samantha Anderson, who has struck out 17 batters in 11.0 innings, while not allowing a run.

Augsburg is led by Melissa Lee in her 13th season. She is assisted by Pam Latterell, Stephanie Johnson and John Schiek.

Macalester Scots
Macalester has begun their 2018 season with a 3-3 record. They are scheduled to begin play at the Tucson Invitational on Saturday against Rockford University. Senior Vivi Gregorich has led the Scots so far this season, tallying six hits in 14 at bats, while also driving in five runs. Junior Sophie Migacz is the leader on the mound with a 2.82 ERA and 15 strikeouts.

The Scots are under the leadership of Jody Gabriel who is in her seventh season with the program. She is assisted by Heather Jennings and Ashley Bertrand.

Buena Vista Beavers
The Beavers opened their 2018 season on Saturday with wins coming against Northwestern-St. Paul and Lake Forest. Buena Vista is led by freshman Carlee Guyett, who leads the team with six hits and four runs batted in. Setting the pitching pace for Buena Vista is senior Moriah Guyett, who leads the team with eight strikeouts in 7.0 innings pitched.

The Beavers are led by Mandie Berneking in her fourth season. She is assisted by Katie Yoder and Lou Rizzuti.

Gustavus Adolphus Golden Gusties
Gustavus Adolphus has posted a 1-3 record to begin their 2018 season. In the Gusties 4-3 win over UW-La Crosse, sophomore Sidney Welp led the team with two hits, two runs scored and one run batted in. Freshman Ashley Neuenfeldt pitched the complete game, allowing only three runs and striking out seven batters.

Gustavus Adolphus is under the leadership of Britt Stewart who is in her second season with the program. She is assisted by Kirsten Prunty.

Spartan Notes
With 21 career home runs, senior Grace Tritchler is just 13 shy of the program record (34)…The Spartans have hit .373 as a team this season…Five individuals have hit home runs for CWRU already this season including Tritchler, senior Katie Wede, junior Nicole Doyle and sophomores Nicole Carty and Melissa Cuellar…Wede currently leads the Spartans with nine hits and a .529 batting average, while also driving in six runs…Wede also has 50 stolen bases for her career which ranks as the second most in program history…The CWRU softball will return home after spring break and then travel to Alliance, Ohio to play the University of Mount Union on Wednesday, March 21st for a doubleheader.
