Case Western Reserve University junior Grace Tritchler hit two home runs and drove in six RBI's, as the Spartans swept a doubleheader over Thiel College at Mather Park on Tuesday afternoon. CWRU picked up an 8-7 win over the Tomcats in the early contest, and a 6-1 victory in the late affair.
The two wins raised the Spartans' record to 11-8 on the year, while Thiel fell to 6-12 overall with the losses.
Tritchler led the Spartans at the plate with a three-for-six performance, including two home runs and six runs batted in. She now has four home runs this season and 17 throughout her Spartan career.
Game 1: CWRU 8, Thiel 7
The Spartans took the early lead in the first game of the day, including a solo home run from Tritchler to give CWRU a 2-0 lead.
Thiel responded in the top of the third with four runs to take their first lead of the game at 4-2. The Spartans didn't waste any time answering in the bottom of half of the inning when Tritchler hit her second home run of the game, a three-run shot, which would put the Spartans back on top at 5-4.
The Tomcats evened the score at 5-5 in top of fifth, before the Spartans would again take the lead after a throwing error by Thiel that plated two runs.
Thiel again responded in the seventh with a two-run home run that knotted the score at 7-7. CWRU started the bottom half of the seventh with a single from junior Maren Waldner, followed by a sac bunt from Tritchler to advance Waldner to second. Senior Annie Wennerberg then stepped to the plate and delivered a single that advanced Waldner to third. Wennerberg then stole second and Waldner scored on a throwing error by the catcher to give the Spartans the 8-7 walk-off win.
Wennerberg went the distance on the mound to improve to 7-2 on the year. Tritchler, Waldner, Wennerberg and freshman Melissa Cuellar each had a pair of the Spartans' 10 hits in the game.
Mackenzie Gullette took the loss for Thiel on the mound, falling to 3-4 on the year.
Game 2: CWRU 6, Thiel 1
The second game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Tritchler hit a single to right center that drove in junior Katie Wede and Waldner to put CWRU ahead at 2-0.
The Tomcats answered in the following in a run, but the Spartans added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth when Wede delivered an RBI double that drove in Cuellar from second.
CWRU added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth, including an RBI single from Waldner, that would secure the 6-1 Spartan victory.
Junior Katie Dzierwa pitched the complete game, scattering three hits, while striking out four and yielding just one unearned run. She improved to 3-4 on the season.
At the plate, Wede went two-for-three with one double and one RBI, while freshman Ashley Carroll added a two-for-three day with one run scored.
The Spartans will look to extend their winning streak this weekend, when the team welcomes UAA rival New York University to Mather Park for a four-game series on Friday and Saturday. The first game of the doubleheader on Friday is slated to start at 3:00 p.m.
