The Case Western Reserve University softball team suffered a loss in Waltham, Massachusetts on Friday, falling 4-2 to Brandeis University in a weather-shortened game.
The Spartans and Judges made it to the bottom of the fifth before they had to call the game due to inclement weather. The second game of the originally scheduled doubleheader was cancelled. The two teams are still scheduled to play their doubleheader on Sunday, April 2nd.
With the loss, CWRU drops to 9-8 on the season and 2-3 in the UAA. Brandeis improves to 6-4 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
Game 1: Brandeis 4, CWRU 2 (5 inn.)
The game went scoreless through the first four innings, before the Spartans broke through in the bottom of the fifth, following an RBI single from junior Maren Waldner, and a sacrifice fly from junior Grace Tritchler that drove in sophomore Nicole Doyle from third.
The Judges evened the score in the bottom half of the inning with two bases loaded RBI walks from Taylor Simala and Caroline Sippin. Brandeis then hit a two-run RBI single to give them the 4-2 lead. The game was called with two outs in the bottom of the fifth due to inclement weather.
Waldner led the Spartans at the plate with a two-for-three performance, including an RBI and a stolen base.
CWRU senior pitcher Annie Wennerberg pitched 4.2 innings, striking out four and allowing two earned runs. Junior Katie Dzierwa pitched in relief and allowed two earned runs, falling to 2-4 on the year. Scottie Todd picked up the win for Brandeis, allowing two runs on six hits.

Case Western Reserve will be back in action on Sunday, April 2nd when the team concludes their series against Brandeis. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
