CWRU Softball Heads South for the Central Florida Rebel Spring Games

The Case Western Reserve University softball team will continue competition in the 2017 season as the team is set to travel to Kissimmee, Florida to play six games in four days from March 14th - 17th at the Central Florida Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida.

CWRU Spartans
The Spartans opened the 2017 season with a 1-3 record at the Beach Blast Tournament in Virginia Beach, Virginia. After dropping their first two games of the season, the Spartans came alive against Rutgers University-Camden to secure a 12-0 win. Senior Annie Wennerberg went six innings, holding Rutgers-Camden scoreless on one hit and a walk, while striking out six batters. It was her first win of the season and 42nd of her Spartan career. CWRU scored their 12 runs with nine different players picking up RBI's.

The Spartans are guided by Head Coach Josie Henry, who is in her seventh season with the program. Henry is assisted by Shannel Blackshear and Ashley Parello.

TCNJ Lions
The College of New Jersey has opened their 2017 season with a record of 3-3 after already starting play at the Central Florida Spring Games. They began play on Saturday and have won three out of the four games that they have played. The Lions are led by freshman Meghan Mayernic, who has nine hits in her first 19 at bats, including one home run and three run batted in. Setting the pitching pace for TCNJ is junior Sam Platt, who has 2.42 ERA and nine strikeouts.

TCNJ is led by Sally Miller in her 22nd season. She is assisted by Tiffany Rhea and Kim Ragazzo.

Franklin & Marshall Diplomats
The Diplomats began their season on Sunday at the Rebel Spring Games with losses coming against Illinois College and Rowan. Franklin & Marshall is led sophomore Taylor Long, who has opened the season with two hits, including a double, and two runs batted in. Junior Izzy Schaefer is the leader on the mound with a 1.00 ERA and four strikeouts.

The Diplomats are under the leadership of Mike Cooperstein who is in his 10th season with the program. He is assisted by Ken Rhoades and Malorie Sassaman.

Mount Saint Mary Knights
The Knights will open the 2017 season at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee after closing the 2016 season with a 23-12 mark. Mount Saint Mary is led by junior Cindy Connoly, who recorded 26 RBI's and four home runs during the 2016 season. Connoly also was the leader on the mound with a 1.87 ERA and 124 strikeouts.

The Knights are led by Jessica Mushel in her fourth season. She is assisted by Samantha Howe and John Elliott.

Lesley Lynx
Lesley began their season on Sunday at the Rebel Spring Games with losses coming against Illinois Wesleyan and the College of New Jersey. Freshman Sarah Bushman has the led the Lynx so far this season, tallying three hits in seven bats, while also stealing a base. Senior Alyson Nisbet has pitched seven innings this season, allowing six runs on 11 hits.

Lesley is under the leadership of Heather Ross who is in her first season with the program. She is assisted by Annie Sommers and Ashley Iannone.

Transylvania Pioneers
The Pioneers have opened the 2017 season with a record of 3-3 after beginning play yesterday at the Rebel Spring Games with two wins. Transylvania is led by sophomore Shelby Gambrell, who leads the team with eight hits, four runs scored and four stolen bases. Setting the pitching pace for Transylvania is junior Renae Morton, who leads the team with a 2.07 ERA and 16 strikouts.

The Pioneers are led by Shawn Hendrickson in his third season. He is assisted by Natalie Hernandez and Andrew Hundley.

Utica Pioneers
Utica began their 2017 season on Sunday at the Rebel Spring Games with losses coming against Springfield College and Cornell College. Sophomore Nicole Rice has led the Pioneers so far this season, tallying three hits in five at bats for a .600 batting average. Junior Brittany Meka has been the leader on the mound with a 2.33 ERA in six innings pitched this season.

Utica is under the leadership of Pat Mineo who is in his 13th season with the program. He is assisted by Danielle Alpi, Vaughn Saville and Kari Beane.

Spartan Notes
With 42 career wins, senior pitcher Annie Wennerberg is just 10 shy of the program record (52)…The Spartans have hit .303 as a team this season…Two individuals have hit home runs for CWRU already this season including juniors Grace Tritchler and Katie Wede…Sophomore Nicole Doyle currently leads the Spartans with seven hits and a .500 batting average, while  also driving in four runs…Including Tritchler's two home runs so far this season, she now has 15 for her career which ranks as fifth most in program history….The CWRU softball team will begin play at home on Tuesday, March 21st when they host Kenyon College for a doubleheader.
