The Case Western Reserve University softball team split a doubleheader against Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio on Saturday, as the Spartans topped the Battling Bishops 3-2 in extra innings in the first game, and then falling 12-4 in six innings in the second contest.
With the Split, the Spartans now stand at 16-18 on the year, while Ohio Wesleyan is 8-16 overall for the campaign.
Game 1: CWRU 3, Ohio Wesleyan 2 (8 innings)
Case Western Reserve junior pitcher Annie Wennerberg hit a game-tying home run in the top of the sixth and freshman designated player Alex Favazza singled to drive in Wennerberg in the top of the eight, to give the Spartans a 3-2 win in extra innings over Ohio Wesleyan in the first game of the day on Saturday.
Wennerberg went two-for-four at the plate in the game with the solo home run, scoring two runs and driving one in, while also stealing a base. On the mound, Wennerberg picked up the complete-game win to improve to 10-9 on the season, holding the Battling Bishops to just two runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits and two walks, while striking out seven batters.
Ohio Wesleyan got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the third, before the Spartans evened the score on an RBI groundout by sophomore Katie Wede in the top of the fifth that scored sophomore Lindsey Robinson. After the Bishops regained the lead with a run in the fifth, Wennerberg led off the top of the sixth with a solo home run to knot the score again, this time at 2-2.
The home run was Wennerberg's fifth of the season and the program-leading 30th of her career.
The game remained tied at 2-2 until the top of the eighth. Wennerberg would again be at the center of the rally, leading the inning off with a single, stealing second, and moving to third on a groundout. With two outs in the inning, Favazza singled into left field, driving in Wennerberg for the eventual game-winning run.
Lily Gresh would lead off the bottom of the eighth inning with a double for Ohio Wesleyan, but Wennerberg would retire the next three batters in order to close out the win for her 10th complete game of the season.
Robinson added a two-for-three game at the plate with a pair of singles and a stolen base for the Spartans, accounting for two of the Spartans eight hits in the contest.
Relief pitcher Bianca Sibilly took the loss for Ohio Wesleyan, falling to 0-1 on the season.
Game 2: Ohio Wesleyan 12, CWRU 4 (6 innings)
Ohio Wesleyan overcame an early deficit in the second game, scoring five runs in both the first and fourth innings, to go on to force a split against the Spartans with a 12-4 win in six innings in the second game of the day.
The Spartans scored a run in the top of the first, when Wede came around to score on an RBI single by sophomore Grace Tritchler, after reaching on a double with one out in the innings. However, the Bishops responded with a five-run bottom of the inning against Wennerberg, jumping out to a 5-1 lead.
The Spartans had an answer, scoring three runs in the top of the second to cut the lead back to a run, 5-4. Two runs came across for the Spartans on an error, and Wennerberg added an RBI single during the frame. However, Ohio Wesleyan scored a run in the bottom of the second and five in the bottom of the fourth to extend the leas to 11-4. The Bishops scored again in the sixth with two outs, forcing the game to end early due to the run-rule.
Wede was two-for-four with two runs scored, two doubles, and an RBI in the second game. Wennerberg took the loss on the mound to drop to 10-10, while Allie DeLooze picked up the win for Ohio Wesleyan, improving to 5-5.
The Spartans will return home for a doubleheader against Trine University on Sunday, April 17th at Mather Park in Cleveland. Prior to the start of the game, the team will honor its four graduating senior players – Abbey Filliez, Kristen Klemmer, Meghann McMahon and Rebecca Molnar – with a special 'Senior Day' ceremony.
