CWRU Softball to Open Home Schedule against Hiram on Tuesday

The Case Western Reserve University softball team is scheduled to play its first home games of the 2016 season this week, when the squad plays host to Hiram College for a doubleheader at Mather Park on Tuesday, March 29th, starting at 3:30 p.m.

CWRU Spartans
The Spartans will look to bounce back after getting swept in a doubleheader at Wittenberg University over the weekend, losing 4-1 in the first game to the Tigers, and 8-4 in the second contest.  The two losses dropped Case Western Reserve to 10-16 overall on the season.  The team is batting .302 this season and averaging 5.0 runs per game, while the pitching staff has tallied a 4.05 earned run average with a .294 opponents' batting average.

The Spartans are under the leadership of Head Coach Josie Henry, who is now in her sixth season with the team, and has a career record of 136-95, good for a .589 winning percentage.  Henry is assisted by Ashley Parello, Molly O'Brien and Natalie DeMatteis.

Hiram Terriers
Hiram stands at 5-11 on the year, but after opening the campaign with an 0-10 record, the Terriers have bounced back to win five of their last six games, including a doubleheader split at home against John Carroll University last week.  The Terriers are averaging 3.5 runs per game this season and batting .276 as a team, while pitching to a 4.60 earned run average with a .343 opponents' batting average.

Hiram is coached by second-year skipper Jackie Mangola, who has a 14-34 record during her time with the team.  She is assisted by Erica Bryan.

Matchup History
This will be the first meeting between the two teams since the 2013 season, when the Spartans swept a home doubleheader against Hiram, winning the first game 5-3, and the second contest 9-1 in five innings.  Current senior Rebecca Molnar pitched in the second game, picking up a complete-game win, allowing just one run on two hits and striking out six batters over five innings of work.

Spartan Notes
Tuesday's games will begin a stretch of 16 home games out of the Spartans' next 22 total contests to end the season… The Spartans have won their home-opening game each of the previous four seasons, including a 9-7 win over Geneva College last season… Junior Annie Wennerberg tied the school record with her 28th career home run during the team's game against Brandeis on March 9th… She matched the mark previously held by former Spartan Lauren Wolz (2009-12)… She is also seventh in school history with 90 career RBIs, 46 behind the program record, and two behind Ashley Parello for sixth in the record book… Sophomore Lindsey Robinson leads the team with a .386 batting average this year…The Spartans are 5-1 in games decided by five runs or more… The team is 3-0 when it scores at least 10 runs in a game… The Spartans are 9-0 when leading after six innings... Sophomore Grace Tritchler has a six-game hitting streak, the longest active streak by a Spartan player… Tritchler is hitting .500 (11-for-22) with two home runs, five doubles, eight runs batted in and six runs scored during the streak… Her team-leading six home runs this season match her total from all of last year, and her 12 career home runs are tied for the seventh-most ever by a Spartan.
