Softball to Open Home Season against Thiel; Travel to Ohio Northern this Weekend

The Case Western Reserve University softball team will play its home-opener this week, welcoming Thiel College to Mather Park for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 19th.  The Spartans will then travel to Ada, Ohio on Sunday, March 19th for a doubleheader at Ohio Northern University starting at 1:00 p.m.

For Sunday's games at Ohio Northern, there will be live stats at for both games.

CWRU Spartans
The Spartans will begin the weekend with an overall record of 7-13, following a 2-8 mark during the recent University Athletic Association Championships in Altamonte Springs, Florida.  The team has hit .293 this season and averaged 4.7 runs per game this season, while the pitching staff has a team ERA of 3.68 with an opponents' batting average of .289.

The Spartans are under the leadership of Head Coach Josie Henry, who is now in her sixth season with the team, and has a career record of 133-92.  Henry is assisted by Ashley Parello, Molly O'Brien and Natalie DeMatteis.

Thiel Tomcats
The Tomcats opened their season on March 6th, and spent the last week in Claremont, Florida, going 4-6 in 10 games.  Thiel will be looking to end a three-game losing streak when the team comes to Cleveland on Saturday.  The Tomcats have hit .309 this year and averaged 4.4 runs per game, while the pitching staff has a 4.52 ERA with a .293 opponents' batting average.

Thiel is led by Head Coach Lori Schimmel, who is in her first season with the Tomcats after compiling a 247-336-2 record during her 16 years as the Head Coach at Wooster.  She is assisted Danielle Massengill

Last year, the Spartans played a doubleheader at Thiel, winning 9-1 in five innings and 15-7 in six innings.  Junior Annie Wennerberg hit two home runs over the two games, with sophomore Grace Tritchler adding a home run as well.

Ohio Northern Polar Bears
Ohio Northern also opened its season in Clermont, Florida, going 9-5 during their first 14 games of the campaign.  Sunday's games against CWRU will be the Polar Bears' first home contests of the season.  The team has batted .298 and averaged 5.7 runs per game, while the pitching staff has a 4.03 ERA with a .239 opponents' average.

The Polar Bears are coached by Ali Hess, who is in her third season with the team, leading the Polar Bears to a 56-38 record.  She is assisted by Sunny Jones and Les Bowman.

This will be the first meeting between the two teams in the last seven seasons.

Spartan Notes
The Spartans have gone 39-11 in home games at Mather Park over the last four seasons, good for a .780 winning percentage… The team was 12-2 at home last season, winning each of their final eight home contests of the season… The Spartans have won their last four home opening games, including a 9-7 win over Geneva last season… CWRU junior Annie Wennerberg tied the school record with her 28th career home run during the team's game against Brandeis on March 9th… Wennerberg matched the mark previously held by former Spartan Lauren Wolz (2009-12)… She is also 10th in school history with 86 career RBIs, 50 behind the program record, and one behind Molly O'Brien and Amy Taylor for eighth-place in the record book… Wennerberg is also ninth among DIII pitchers with 66 strikeouts… Sophomore second baseman Lindsey Robinson had a Spartan-best 11-game hitting streak between February 20th and March 8th… Robinson hit .390 (16-for-41) during the stretch… Freshman shortstop Nicole Doyle has hit safely in her last seven games, and leads the team with a .400 batting average (eight-for-20) during the last seven games… Sophomore infielder Maren Waldner leads the team with seven multiple-hit games this year… Sophomore infielder Grace Tritchler has a team-best four multiple RBI games… Tritchler's four home runs this season lead the team and are 17th among all NCAA DIII players… The Spartans have hit .314  (61-for-194) with runners in scoring position this season, and .333 (29-for-87) against left-handed pitchers.
