The Case Western Reserve University softball team will continue competition in the 2016 season as the team is set to travel to Clermont, Florida to take on Wheaton College (Ill.) and Bethany College in the NTC Tournament on Saturday, March 5th.

The Spartans played a flawless 4-0 weekend with wins over Marietta College and Emory & Henry College to advance to 5-3 overall on the season. After dropping the first three games of the season, the Spartans have rallied back and are currently on a five-game winning streak. Freshman Alex Favazza and sophomore Grace Tritchler lead the Spartans with nine RBIs and two home runs each. Over the four game weekend, Tritchler went four for 10 with a double, homerun, seven rbis, four runs and two stolen bases. On the mound, junior Annie Wennerberg earned a 3-0 record with 23 strikeouts over 21.1 innings.
The Spartans are guided by Head Coach Josie Henry, who is starting her sixth season with the program. Henry is assisted by Molly O'Brien, Ashley Parello and Natalie DeMatteis.
Wheaton finished the 2015 year with a 26-14 record, and will be opening its 2016 season this weekend in Clermont, Florida at the NTC Tournament against Case Western Reserve. The Thunder return graduate student Ellen Radandt who led the 2015 squad with 31 RBIs and eight home runs. Also returning, senior Katie Thornton led the team with a .419 batting average. Thornton also was the leader on the mound with a 1.69 ERA and 127 strikeouts.
Wheaton is led by Katie West in her fourth season. She is assisted by Jennifer Mayerik, Emily Fedyski and Paul Petricca.
The Bison will also open up the 2016 season at the NTC Tournament in Clermont after closing the 2015 season with a 27-18 mark. Bethany is led by senior Deanna Mihalco, who recorded 32 RBIs and six home runs during the 2015 season. Senior Kayla Kelly also was a threat for the Bison, tallying 30 RBIs and a batting average of .381. Setting the pitching pace for Bethany is sophomore Cassie Weiss, who ended last season with a 3.28 ERA.
Bethany is under the leadership of Jan Forsty who is in his 29th season with the program. He is assisted by Courtney Moyer and Kristin Prokopakis.
CWRU met up with both Wheaton and Bethany last season during the Dot Richardson Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. The Spartans defeated the Thunder in six innings by a score of 13-5, with Wennerberg and Tritchler each hitting home runs. Case Western Reserve also outscored Bethany 9-1, closing the game in six innings. In the game, Wennerberg hit a home run and two doubles.
Junior pitcher Annie Wennerberg was recently named the UAA Pitcher of the Week after helping the Spartans to four wins this past weekend...The Spartans have hit .342 as a team this season...Four individuals have hit home runs for CWRU already this season including freshmen Alex Favazza and Nicole Doyle as well as Annie Wennerberg and Grace Tritchler...Sophomore Maren Waldner currently leads the Spartans with a .423 batting average...With 26 career home runs, Annie Wennerberg is just two shy of the program record (28)...In 2015, the Spartans recorded a 32-11 record, setting a new program-high mark for victories in a season...From March 8-13 the CWRU Softball team will compete in the UAA Championship Tournament in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
