Spartans Swept in Season Opening Doubleheader at William Peace

The Case Western Reserve University softball team suffered a sweep in its season-opening doubleheader at William Peace University on Saturday afternoon, falling 12-8 in the first game and dropping an 11-9 decision in the second contest.

The Spartans jumped out to an early lead in the first game on a two-run home run off the bat of sophomore Grace Tritchler.  Making her collegiate debut, freshman Nicole Doyle added a solo home run in the third to boost the Spartans' lead to 3-0.

However, William Peace responded with three runs in the third to tie the game at 3-3.  In the top of the fourth, senior Kristen Klemmer drove in a run with a base hit, and freshman Alex Favazza followed with a three-run home run, putting the Spartans back out in front, 7-4, before a four-run bottom of the fourth gave the Pacers their first lead of the game, 8-4.  Klemmer would tie the game again in the fifth with an RBI single, but three runs in the fifth and a pair in the sixth by William Peace put the game out of reach for CWRU.

Klemmer finished the first game three-for-three with a pair of RBIs and two stolen bases.

CWRU took another early lead in the second game, scoring six runs on seven hits in the second inning, including a pair on a two RBI single from senior Abbey Filliez.  After William Peace scored two in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 6-2, the Spartans responded again in the third, bolstering their lead on a two-RBI double from sophomore Katie Wede and an RBI single from sophomore Maren Waldner.

William Peace, however, tied the game with a seven-run bottom of the third, and took the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth inning.  The Spartans would score three runs in the top of the sixth, but the game was called due to darkness, and the runs were removed from the scoreboard.

The Spartans will look to bounce back tomorrow, when the team wraps up its weekend road trip against Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina.  The doubleheader against the Avenging Angels is slated for an 11:00 a.m. start.
