Four Spartans Softball Players Earn All-Region Honors from NFCA

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Four Spartans from the Case Western Reserve University softball team have been honored as the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) announced the players chosen for the 2015 NFCA Division III All-Region softball teams.

As in the past, the squad is comprised of three teams in each of the country's eight NCAA regions. 

Senior Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola) and sophomore Annie Wennerberg (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) earned first team honors, senior Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity) was honored with a second team award and senior Ashley Parello (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) earned third team honors.

O'Brien, a three-time first-team All-UAA selection, ranks first on the squad and fourth in the UAA with a .438 average. She is a four-year starter and ranks first all-time in program history with a .389 batting average. In 160 games played, O'Brien has recorded 39 doubles and 87 RBIs. In addition to ranking first in average, she is first in CWRU history in hits (218) and triples (13) and is tied for fourth in games played (160). 

Wennerberg, UAA co-Player of the Year and First Team All-UAA Selection, has posted one of the best years in the history of Case Western Reserve University softball. Wennerberg leads NCAA Division III with 20 home runs, shattering the previous CWRU single-season record of 10. Wennerberg also broke the single-season school record for runs batted in with 60 through the regular season. The sophomore also led the way for the Spartans by winning a team-high and UAA third-best 15 wins on the mound with a team-high 91 strikeouts.  

Breaking the school record for career RBIs with 136, Roberts has started all 43 games during her senior season and tallied 13 doubles and seven home runs with a .387 batting average. 

Parello, a repeat second-team All-UAA selection, has had a career year with a .371 batting average, seven homers, 40 RBIs and 16 doubles. Back in March, she recorded four home runs in three games and drove in nine runs to be tabbed UAA Softball Hitter of the Week.

The Spartans concluded the regular season with an overall record of 32-11. The team's 32 wins are the most in program history passing the previous record in 2001 (31-10).

All-Region players are nominated and selected by NFCA member coaches in each of the eight Division III regions. First team All-Region choices are eligible for selection to the NFCA All-America team, which will be announced the evening ofMay 21 online at NFCA.org and in person at the NCAA Division III Championship banquet in Salem, Va.
