CLEVELAND - The Case Western Reserve University softball team extended their winning streak to nine games and improve to 30-11 with two games remaining in the 2015 season after blanking Oberlin College 7-0 and 15-0 during a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
Right off the bat, the Spartans hit the scoreboards starting with a double from senior rightfielder Ashley Parello (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township). CWRU added three more runs in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead as senior second baseman Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola) hit a home run.
The Spartans scored five more unanswered runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. After senior first baseman Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) singled through the right side, freshman Lindsey Robinson (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) entered the game as a pinch runner. Following an O'Brien single, freshman third baseman Christine Scherer (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny Senior) doubled to right center to score O'Brien and Robinson. A double by Parello would score Scherer. Senior left fielder Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity) hit her seventh homerun of the season to score the final two runs of the game.
On the mound, sophomore Annie Wennerberg (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) pitched all five innings striking out five batters.
CWRU started the first inning with bats blazing scoring seven runs. O'Brien was first to step up to bat, hitting her seventh home run of the season. Freshman first baseman Grace Tritchler (San Antonio, Texas/Winston Churchill) singled to center field. Tritchler advanced to second and Taylor scored on a wild pitch. Junior shortstop Erin Dreger (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance) reached on an error and scored Tritchler. Two batters later, O'Brien returned to the plate and hit a single to left center bringing in two runners from the field. For the seventh run of the inning, Parello was hit by a pitch and advanced all batters on base.
After a scoreless second inning, the Spartans added five more to the board to take a 12-0 lead. Roberts singled through the left side bringing in two runs from the field. Tritchler singled up the middle and Dreger singled to left field each bringing in a run. Junior pinch hitter Taylor Lemke (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) reached on a fielder's choice for the fifth run.
The final three runs of the game came in the bottom of the seventh. Freshman centerfielder Abbey Filliez (Canton, Ohio/Perry) doubled to left center bringing in O'Brien from the field. Junior pinch hitter Kristen Klemmer (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) reached first on an error by the first baseman and freshman first baseman Maren Waldner (Redondo Beach, Calif./Chadwick) singled up the middle for the final score of the game.
Taylor pitched four innings to earn the win for the Spartans and extend her record to keep a perfect 10-0 this season.
The Spartans will conclude their regular season tomorrow afternoon, Sunday, April 26 at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
