GREENVILLE, Pa. - The Case Western Reserve University swept their second doubleheader of the weekend to advance to 26-11 overall as the team defeated Thiel College 9-1 in five innings and 15-7 in six innings.
In the first game, the Spartans took a 4-0 lead during the top of the second inning leading off with a double to left field from junior Erin Dreger (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance) to score two runs from the field. Freshman third baseman Christine Sherer (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny Senior) singled up the middle to score Dreger. Senior second baseman Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola) tripled to left field to score Sherer.
The Spartans added five more runs in the top of the fifth inning highlighted by a Wennerberg grand slam followed by a home run to left field from freshman designated player Grace Tritchler (San Antonio, Texas/Winston Churchill).
Thiel would score a run in the bottom of the fifth, but CWRU would remain ahead for the win.
During the second game, the Tomcats would take a 2-0 lead before the Spartans had an eight-run outburst in the top of the second. Freshman catcher Abi Groseclose (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) singled up the middle and advanced to second on the throw sending in two runs to home plate. An O'Brien single to left field would put another run on the board for the Spartans. A single to left field from Sherer and a second single up the middle from Parello added two more runs to the total. To wrap up the inning, Wennerberg hit her 18th home run of the season.
The Tomcats attempted to rally back scoring three runs in the bottom of the third and fourth, but the Spartans put five runs on the board in the top of the sixth to take a 13-6 lead. O'Brien singled through the left side, senior right fielder Ashley Parello (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) doubled to left field and Parello scored on a wild pitch to extend the Spartan lead.
To secure the win the Spartans would score two more runs in the sixth as Sherer would reach on an error by the Tomcats third baseman allowing two runs to score.
The Spartans will now return to Mather Park on Thursday, April 23 for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m. against Adrian College.
