CLEVELAND - The Case Western Reserve University softball team split a doubleheader losing game one 5-2 then switching the momentum for a 6-3 win during the second game against John Carroll University.
The Spartans are now 22-11 on the season while the Blue Streaks are now 19-13.
John Carroll took a 1-0 lead, but the Spartans tied up the game putting their first run on the board in the top of the sixth as sophomore pitcher Annie Wennerberg (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) singled to the shortstop scoring freshman pinch runner Lindsey Robinson (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin).
After another John Carroll run, the Spartans tied up the game 2-2 in the seventh as freshman first baseman Maren Waldner (Redondo Beach, Calif./Chadwick) singled through the left side scoring junior pinch runner Kristen Klemmer (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park). The Blue Streaks would score three runs in the bottom of the seventh for the win.
Wennerberg finished the first game 2-for3 with an RBI and Waldner went 1-for-1 with an RBI.
During the second game, the Blue Streaks were the first on the scoreboard again, but the Spartans quickly tied up the game as senior second baseman Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola) stepped up to bat with bases loaded. O'Brien grounded out to the pitcher, but got an RBI sending in a runner to home plate.
The Spartans increased their lead to 3-1 in the top of the fifth. After junior short stop Erin Dreger (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance) singled, O'Brien doubled to right-center to score Dreger. Senior designated player Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity) then singled up the middle to score O'Brien. For a 4-1 edge, Klemmer scored in the top of the sixth.
While the Blue Streaks fought back with two more runs before the end of the game, the Spartans remained ahead with two runs in the seventh. Roberts tripled to left field scoring senior rightfielder Ashley Parello (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township). Freshman first baseman Grace Tritchler (San Antonio, Texas/Winston Churchill) hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Roberts to secure the win.
O'Brien went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and Roberts went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs.
The Spartans now return to Mather Park on Saturday, April 18 to celebrate senior day during the doubleheader against Ohio Wesleyan University which begins at 1:00 p.m.
