CHICAGO - The Case Western Reserve University softball team split a doubleheader against University Athletic Association competitor University of Chicago, winning the first game 3-2 and dropping the second game 6-5 in nine innings.
The Spartans, who currently are No. 1 in all of Division III in home runs per game, are now 21-10 overall while the Maroons sit at 10-12.
In game one the Spartans took an early 1-0 lead after the first inning as senior right fielder Ashley Parello (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) doubled to right field to get on base and senior first baseman Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) singled to right field to score Parello.
The Spartans increased their lead to 2-0 in the top of the third as freshman designated hitter Grace Tritchler (San Antonio, Texas/Winston Churchill) hit a home run to rightfield. The Spartans scored their third run in the top of the fourth with a sacrifice from Taylor to score a run from the field.
Chicago tried to rally back scoring two runs, but the Spartans were able to hold onto the lead for the win.
In the second game, CWRU was first on the boards again as senior second baseman Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola) tripled down the left field line and Parello singled right field to score O'Brien.
Chicago then took a 2-1 lead, but the Spartans rallied back with four runs in the top of the sixth inning as senior designated hitter Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity) recorded the only hit of the inning with a grand slam.
Chicago turned the momentum in their favor as they scored three runs in the sixth and one in the ninth to outscore the Spartans 6-5.
The CWRU softball team now returns to Cleveland for a doubleheader at John Carroll University on Thursday, April 16 beginning at 3:30 p.m.
