ANGOLA, Ind. - The Case Western Reserve University softball team dropped two straight (8-4, 15-6) in a doubleheader against No. 9 Trine University on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans' kicked off the top of the first inning with a home run from senior second baseman Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola). Trine tied the game up to head into the second and would add five more runs in the bottom of the fourth and another in the fifth and sixth to take an 8-1 lead.
The Spartans' late rally in the top of the seventh wasn't enough. Freshman centerfielder Katie Wede (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) doubled in three runs.
In the second game, the Spartans topped off the first inning with an O'Brien home run to left center. Trine then responded with a home run of their own to take a 3-1 lead.
The Spartans scored four times in the fourth inning to take a 5-3 advantage. Senior rightfielder Ashley Parello (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) singled in a run, a single from freshman third baseman Grace Tritchler (San Antonio, Texas/Winston Churchill) drove in two runs, and a stolen base from freshman Lindsey Robinson (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) brought in the final run of the inning.
Trine evened the score with a run in the third and another in the fourth before ending the game in the fifth inning with a 10-run outburst.
For the day, O'Brien went 5-for-5 with two home runs and two RBIs.
The CWRU softball team will now travel to University Athletic Association competitor University of Chicago for a doubleheader tomorrow, April 12 beginning at 11:00 CT.
