WOOSTER, Ohio - The Case Western Reserve University softball team swept The College of Wooster 3-1 and 6-0 on the road to advance to 18-7 overall during the 2015 season.
CWRU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning as freshman centerfielder Katie Wede (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) singled and senior rightfielder Ashley Parello (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) drove her in with a double to left center.
The Spartans increased their lead to 2-0 in the top of the fifth. After a Wede single, Parello reached on a Wooster error. Senior designated player Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity) laid down a sacrifice bunt, sending Wede to third and Parello to second. Freshman third baseman Grace Tritchler (San Antonio, Texas/Winston Churchill) singled to first base to score Wede.
The Spartans scored their third run in the top of the seventh to secure the victory with a run-scoring double from Roberts. Roberts went 2-for-3 with one RBI while Wede finished 4-for-4 and scored all three Spartan runs.
In game two, the Spartans took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. With Parello and Wede on base, Roberts doubled to right field to plate both runners.
The game remained scoreless until the Spartans scored four times on four hits in the seventh inning. Freshman catcher Abi Groseclose (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) singled up the middle. Junior Kristen Klemmer (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) entered the game as a pinch runner for Groseclose and scored on a Parello single up the middle. A double from sophomore leftfielder Annie Wennerberg (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) secured the 6-0 win for the Spartans.
The Spartans return to Mather Park on Monday, April 6 for a doubleheader against Denison University beginning at 3:30 p.m.
