CLEVELAND - The Case Western Reserve University softball team dropped to 16-7 on the season with a 11-7 loss and a 3-2 loss against Bluffton University this afternoon at Mather Park.
During the first game, the Spartans took a 4-0 lead after the first inning highlighted by singles from senior designated player Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity) and senior pitcher Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe).
To make the score 5-0 in the bottom of the second, sophomore leftfielder Annie Wennerberg (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) grounded out sending in a run. To increase the lead to 7-0, freshman first baseman Maren Waldner (Redondo Beach, Calif./Chadwick) hit a home run to open the fourth inning followed by a double from freshman centerfielder Katie Wede (Carmel, Ind./Carmel).
Senior second baseman Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola) went four-for-four with three runs.
After four silent innings, the Beavers returned to bat scoring five runs in the fifth inning and sixth runs in the sixth for the win.
In the second game, down 3-0 the Spartans two-run rally in the seventh inning from a home run by junior shortstop Erin Dreger (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance) with no outs on the board wasn't enough to pull ahead for the win.
The Spartans return to action tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Wooster, Ohio to take on The College of Wooster in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
