ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - The Case Western Reserve University softball team dropped both games in their fifth day of doubleheaders this week, falling 5-2 against Brandeis University and 4-3 to the University of Rochester.
The Spartans are now 9-5 overall and 4-5 in the UAA. Brandeis moves to 6-6 overall and 3-6 UAA, while No. 19 Rochester is now 8-4 overall and 6-3 in the UAA.
Against Brandeis, the Spartans took the lead 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore pitcher Annie Wennerberg (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) hit her fourth home run of the season, bringing in senior rightfielder Ashley Parello (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township).
The Spartans were unable to hold their lead as the Judges scored one run in the fourth inning and anotherr in the sixth inning before tallying three two-out runs in the seventh.
In the game against Rochester, the Yellowjackets put a run on the board in the first inning, but the Spartans responded with a run of their own in the second as freshman third baseman Abi Groseclose (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) reached first off an error by the Rochester second basema, allowing a run to score.
Rochester grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third, but CWRU again tied up the game in the top of the sixth as a Groseclose single through the right side again drove in a run, but the Yellowjackets responded in the bottom half of the inning with two more runs for a 4-2 edge. The Spartans attempted for a comeback as Wennerberg hit her second home run of the day in the seventh inning, a solo shot that accounted for the final run of the game.
The Spartans return to action for the final day of the UAA Championship tomorrow morning at 10:00 for their second game against the New York University Violets.
