ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - The Case Western Reserve University softball suffered losses against No. 23 Washington University in St. Louis and then No. 8 Emory University with scores of 5-2 and 13-3, respectively, on the fourth day of the University Athletic Association Championship.
The Spartans drop to 9-3 overall and 4-3 in the UAA, while the Washington Bears improve to 14-3 and 6-1 UAA and the Emory Eagles 15-2 and 5-2 UAA.
In the first game, the Bears grabbed a quick lead scoring two runs in the top of the first. The Spartans rallied back with a run in the second as junior shortstop Erin Dreger (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance) singled to centerfield bringing in a runner.
The Bears and the Spartans each scored a run in the third inning to keep the game within one run, but in the top of the fifth the bears scored two more runs to remain ahead for the rest of the game.
Against Emory, the game remained scoreless until the top of the third inning when the Eagles tallied four runs. The Spartans responded in the bottom of the same inning with two runs of their own as freshman third baseman Grace Tritchler (San Antonio, Texas/Winston Churchill) knocked one out of the park putting two runs on the board for CWRU.
Down two headed into the fourth, the Eagles put four more runs on the board and added two more runs to their total to lead 10-2. The Spartans scored their final run in the top of the fifth as freshman first baseman Maren Waldner (Redondo Beach, Calif./Chadwick) singled bringing a runner in to home base.
CWRU softball will return to action tomorrow, March 14 with a doubleheader opening with a 10:00 a.m. matchup against Brandeis University and then concluding the day with a 1:00 game against the University of Rochester.
