MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Senior rightfielder Ashley Parello (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) hit a two-run home run in the third inning and drove in four runs to lead the Case Western Reserve University softball team to a 14-9 win over Rhodes College to remain undefeated. Parello finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored.
The Spartans advance to 3-0, while Rhodes dropped to 1-10.
The Spartans, who pounded out 18 hits, scored five times in the first inning. Sophomore pitcher Annie Wennerberg (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) and senior outfielder Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity) each finished with three at-bats, including two hits. Wennerberg scored three times and drove in a pair of runs on a RBI double in the third inning and a solo home run in the seventh inning.
The Spartans were set to play a second game this afternoon against Rhodes, but the game was cancelled due to inclement weather.
The Spartans are now idle from competition until their annual spring break trip to the "Sunshine State." CWRU will play two games at the Dot Richardson Spring Games on March 7 in Clermont, Florida and then head to Altamonte Springs for the University Athletic Association Championship from March 10-15.
