MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Case Western Reserve University softball team swept Rhodes College to open the 2015 season. The Spartans won the first game, 11-2 in five innings, and took the second game 8-7.
The Spartans (2-0) conclude the weekend on Sunday against Rhodes at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
In the first game, the Spartans pounded out 14 hits, including four home runs. Sophomore pitcher Annie Wennerberg (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) finished 3-for-3 with a home run and four runs batted in and earned the win on the mound. Senior outfielder Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity) hit a three-run home run, while senior rightfielder Ashley Parello (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and first-year catcher Abi Groseclose (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) added solo shots.
In the second game, senior pitcher Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa. /Greater Latrobe) scattered six hits and yielded just one run in five innings to earn the win as the Spartans took an 8-1 lead into the seventh inning and hung on for the victory. Parello hit a solo home run in the fifth inning and hit a three-run shot, her third home run of the day, in the sixth inning. Wennerberg, who recorded the final three outs on the mound, hit her second home run of the doubleheader in the fifth inning.
Following tomorrow's games, the Spartans are idle from competition until their annual spring break trip to the "Sunshine State." CWRU will play two games at the Dot Richardson Spring Games on March 7 in Clermont, Florida andf then head to Altamonte Springs for the University Athletic Association Championship from March 10-15.
