CLEVELAND – Junior designated player Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity) went a combined 3-for-5 with a two-run homer, and the Case Western Reserve University softball team extended its home win streak to 14 games with a doubleheader sweep of Allegheny College (Pa.) on Monday at Mather Park.

The Spartans (23-11) defeated the Gators (12-19) by scores of 6-3 and 9-0 (5 innings). CWRU is now 6-0 at home this season and 14-0 since the beginning of the 2013 campaign.

In addition to Roberts, junior first baseman Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) was 3-for-5 with five RBI. Senior shortstop Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, Mich./Ida) collected a pair of hits for the day to move into a tie for second place on the school's all-time list. With 168 for her career, Lein trails only Lauren Wolz (2009-12) for the most in program history (171).

In game one, the Spartans broke a scoreless tie with five runs in the bottom of the third. After infield singles by junior second baseman Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola) and Lein, senior catcher Amy Taylor (Brier, Wash./Inglemoor) provided the first run with an RBI single up the middle. With the bases loaded two batters later, junior outfielder Ashley Parello (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and Rebecca Taylor hit back-to-back two-run singles.

Allegheny cut into its deficit in the top half of the fourth with RBI singles by Hannah Blinn and Leah Herlocker, but freshman starting pitcher Annie Wennerberg (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) was able to work her way out of the first of two bases-loaded jams. Each team scored once more before Rebecca Taylor came on to throw two innings of scoreless relief.

For the game, sophomore centerfielder/third baseman Rachel Komar (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) and Roberts were each 2-for-3 for the Spartans.

Wennerberg (11-3) allowed three runs (one earned) in five innings with six strikeouts. Rebecca Taylor recorded one strikeout en route to her fourth save of 2014.

Abrianna Sadler (0-5) took the loss in four innings of work for Allegheny. Sadie Stuart and Blinn were each 2-for-4 at the plate.

Game two started very well for the Spartans with a 1-2-3 inning by sophomore pitcher Rebecca Molnar (Independence, Ohio/Independence). Roberts then put her team on the board with a two-run homer to center. Rebecca Taylor hit an RBI double to make the score 3-0 in the second, and the Spartans blew the game open with six runs in the bottom of the third. O'Brien provided the key hit of the frame with a three-run double to center.

Molnar (7-1) continued an outstanding month of April with five shutout innings.

Offensively, Rebecca Taylor finished a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Komar was 2-for-2, and O'Brien was 2-for-3.

Miranda Arison (1-1) took the loss on the mound for the Gators.

The Spartans are back in action tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday, April 22) with a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader at Baldwin Wallace University. The team then concludes the regular season with six in a row at home.
