DELAWARE, Ohio – Playing for the first time since being ranked second in the region by the NCAA, the Case Western Reserve University softball team split a doubleheader at Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon at Margaret Sagan Field.
The Spartans (21-11) took game one by a score of 6-5 in 10 innings before the Battling Bishops (18-14) captured the nightcap, 10-5.
In the opening game, the Spartans came from behind twice to earn a 6-5 victory in 10 innings. OWU jumped out to a 2-0 lead with runs in the second and third before the Spartans answered with a pair of tallies in the top of the fourth.
Senior shortstop Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, Mich./Ida) singled home senior pinch runner Katherine Seo (Salt Lake City, Utah/Olympus) before Lein was driven in by an RBI single from junior outfielder Ashley Parello (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township). In the bottom of the fourth, however, the Battling Bishops scored twice to take a 4-2 advantage.
CWRU scored three times in the top of the fifth to capture its first lead of the afternoon, as senior catcher Amy Taylor (Brier, Wash./Inglemoor) hit a two-RBI double that plated junior second baseman Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola) and freshman pitcher Annie Wennerberg (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) before scoring on Lein's second run scoring single.
After OWU scored in the bottom of the sixth, both team's pitching and defense dominated for the next few innings. Then, in the tenth, Taylor singled home Wennerberg to plate the winning run.
Sophomore Rebecca Molnar (Independence, Ohio/Independence) (6-1) earned the win with four innings of shutout relief.
In game two, the hosts jumped on the board quickly with four runs in the bottom of the first behind a two-run home run by Taylor Dickson and a two-run double by Sarah Flint. OWU would increase its lead to 10-0 as it scored at least one run in each of the next three innings.
The Spartans mounted a late rally with five runs in the top of the fifth inning thanks to a pair of two-RBI doubles by Lein and Taylor. Junior outfielder Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity) plated the fifth run with an RBI single, but CWRU was unable to complete the comeback.
Taylor and Lein led the Spartans for the day. Taylor went a combined 5-for-8 (.625) with three doubles, five RBI and two runs, while Lein went 4-for-9 (.444) with a double, four RBI and two runs scored.
CWRU is schedule to play next on Monday, April 21 in a home doubleheader against Allegheny College (Pa.). First pitch is slotted for 3:30 p.m at Mather Park.
