ALLIANCE, Ohio – Led by three RBI days for junior second baseman Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola) and junior pitcher/first baseman Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe), the Case Western Reserve University softball team swept the University of Mount Union in a doubleheader at 23rd Street Field.

The Spartans (15-9) defeated the Purple Raiders (9-9-1) by scores of 8-1 and 6-3.

O'Brien was a combined 4-for-7 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and three RBI, while Taylor was 2-for-4 with a three-run double in the second game. Playing in her hometown, sophomore Erin Dreger (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance) had a successful homecoming as she went 4-for-8 with a double, a home run, four runs scored and two RBI.

In game one, the Spartans scored three runs in each of the first two innings. Despite recording two quick outs in the top of the first, CWRU rattled off four straight hits with RBI doubles by junior outfielder Ashley Parello (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and Dreger.

After the Purple Raiders responded with a run in the bottom of the inning, CWRU broke the game open with a two-run triple by O'Brien and a sacrifice fly by sophomore centerfielder Rachel Komar (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga). The Spartans added a run in the sixth and seventh inning, respectively, as Komar drove home her second run of the game, and senior shortstop Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, Mich./Ida) singled home Dreger.

Freshman pitcher Annie Wennerberg (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) and sophomore hurler Rebecca Molnar (Independence, Ohio/Independence) combined for nine strikeouts while allowing just the one run. Wennerberg picked up the win in four innings to move to 8-2. Molnar threw three shutout innings in relief for her first save.

Lein was a perfect 4-for-4 with a triple, a run and an RBI, while O'Brien was 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs and two RBI.

In the second game, Mount Union got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the second inning. But, CWRU came storming back with a four-run fourth inning. Parello started the rally with a leadoff single before sophomore designated player Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity) and Dreger singled to load the bases. Taylor followed with a bases-clearing double and later scored on an O'Brien double.

The two teams traded blows in the sixth inning, as senior catcher Amy Taylor (Brier, Wash./Inglemoor) hit an RBI single for the Spartans, and Chelsea Obrzut hit a two-run homer for Mount Union. Dreger hit her first homer of the year in the top of the seventh to add an insurance run for the Spartans.

CWRU is set to finally open its home schedule at Mather Park versus The College of Wooster and Thiel College (Pa.) in a pair of doubleheaders this weekend. Saturday's games against Wooster are set to begin a 1:00 p.m.
